Verdict: hands-on claims tour — impressed by sensor/HRV depth (SDNN+RMSSD both exposed), skeptical of the manufacturer study methodology and 24/7 Siri recap privacy; full accuracy review next week

TL;DR

  • DC Rainmaker's same-day hands-on from Apple Park: the Series 12 ($399, ships Sept 18) gets the S11 chip, a rebuilt optical HR package (24% larger rearranged ECG electrode area, eight windows with double photodiodes replacing four dots, a new LED array), a 60% stronger display, and new colors (dark bronze, gold, ceramic white/blue, Hermès) — "it's actually impressive how many more features there are than they showed in the keynote."
  • He answers Rob ter Horst's open question: Apple now exposes both SDNN and RMSSD HRV metrics depending on feature — Health Age uses SDNN, other features RMSSD — ending years of cross-vendor comparison controversy; all of it lands in Apple Health for third-party apps.
  • HRV specifics beyond the keynote: 7-day wear to establish a baseline (min 4h sleep/night), and a daytime vitals view — per Ray, Apple is the only wearable company exposing continuous background daytime HRV to the end user (frame_0049 caption); readiness score (0-10, four categories, intraday updates, frame_0057) requires the new watches.
  • His skepticism about Apple's published HR-accuracy study: it compares Apple's 5-second HR frequency against competitors' 1-second updates (frame_0025 caption) — "a study published by the manufacturer of the thing that they're making. Who knows?"
  • The controversial bit: Siri recap records conversations 24/7 on-watch in the S11's secure Exclave — raw audio inaccessible even to Apple, no speaker annotation, summaries never quotable (except 15-second Live Rewind snippets sent to Siri), focus-mode-style place/time rules — but Ray isn't "super jazzed" about a searchable summary of everything he utters; battery cost of the 24/7 processing deferred to the later-2026 beta.
  • New workout GPS modes keep full 1-second GPS and full-fidelity HR recording even in max-extended (display shows a 5-min rolling average); health app redesign (AI summaries, longevity tab, Health Age, living-room 5-minute VO2max test) needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone but not a new watch.

Key moments

  • [00:01] In-medias-res open — holding three Series 12 units in the Apple Park hands-on scrum (frame_0001), then relocating somewhere quieter; "impressive how many more features there are than they showed in the keynote."
  • [00:33] S11 chip + secure Exclave — new chipset shared across Series 12/Ultra 4 (quad-core Neural Engine, A20 Pro-derived cores, frame_0015); a dedicated secure Exclave region handles audio processing (frame_0017).
  • [01:01] "Most accurate heart rate sensor in a wearable today" — Apple's own September 2026 study PDF (frame_0007) benchmarks vs Garmin, Samsung; Ray's caveat: manufacturer-published, and it compares Apple's 5s frequency to competitors' 1s updates (frame_0025 caption). Full 15-years-running accuracy review next week.
  • [01:39] Sensor teardown, three layers — ECG electrode surface +24% in a new "petal" arrangement, eight windows with double photodiodes (was four dots), all-new LED array enabling the frequency jump (frame_0033, frame_0035); daytime HR every 5s (was 5min) = 60x.
  • [02:45] HRV finally in Vitals — "Apple's been like the lone ranger in not including HRV, probably because the data wasn't so awesome"; 7-day baseline establishment, ≥4h sleep/night; new daytime vitals toggle — per Ray the only wearable exposing continuous background daytime HRV to users (frame_0049 caption).
  • [03:54] SDNN and RMSSD both exposed — "one for the geeks": Health Age uses SDNN, other features RMSSD, ending the comparison controversy; everything written to Apple Health for third-party access.
  • [04:25] Readiness score walkthrough — 0-10, four categories (Recover / Pace yourself / Ready / Go for it, frame_0057), morning score plus intraday updates (hard workout lowers it, a nap can raise it); built from rings, workouts/training load, overnight vitals, sleep score vs personal baseline; new watches only. Live on his wrist: 7 "Ready" (frame_0003).
  • [05:53] Health app redesign, later 2026 — AI summaries (suggests interval workouts but won't build you one), longevity tab (seven factors, frame_0073), needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone but not a new watch.
  • [06:51] Health Age — demo shows 26.1 years vs actual 30, with per-factor contributions in years (sleep +1.3y, HRV +0.3y, frame_0077); changes daily; Ray plans to compare against his Garmin/Whoop equivalents.
  • [07:20] Living-room VO2max test — 5-minute guided ramp + 1-minute cooldown with phone camera + watch (frame_0080); plus flexibility/strength/movement-mechanics assessments.
  • [08:05] Extended & max-extended GPS modes — both keep 1-second GPS; max-extended records HR in full fidelity but displays a 5-minute rolling average; no AOD/splits/alerts (the old "reduced" profile, renamed and improved).
  • [09:00] Audio intelligence deep-dive — sound recognition (accessibility), Live Rewind (double-press crown → last 15s as text), Siri recap (24/7 conversation summaries: no raw-audio playback even for Apple, no speaker annotation, never quotable — except Live Rewind snippets sent to Siri), instant Shazam via on-device audio signatures ("I watched a demo happen and it was astonishing").
  • [12:22] Ray's verdict on 24/7 recording — "if we learned anything about technology from the last few years… eventually things get broken"; not comfortable with a summary of everything he says existing, even to himself.
  • [13:19] The battery question Apple dodged — what's the hit of 24/7 audio processing? "Beta is coming later this year" — but it's already baked into the 24h Series 12 claim.
  • [13:54] Hardware wrap — 60% stronger display, $399 unchanged, dark bronze/gold/ceramic/Hermès options, ships September 18.

Pure in-medias-res product-first hook: one continuous handheld shot for the full 10 seconds — Ray's arm thrust at the lens holding three Series 12 watches in the chaotic hands-on area (frame_0001), crowd and camera crews visible behind. No title card, no intro; the claim escalates verbally ("brand new… whole slate of new features… most accurate optical heart rate sensor package on the market") while the visual stays locked on the physical product. Classic DC Rainmaker event formula: proof-of-presence first, analysis second.

Editorial profile

  • Shots: 80
  • Cuts/min: 5.51
  • Mean shot length: 10.89s
  • Median shot length: 4.05s
  • Talking-head ratio: n/a (opencv not installed)

Event-turnaround hands-on: median 4s shots (fast) inside a 10.9s mean — quick cuts through Apple Park demo-area footage, macro product shots, and keynote slides, anchored by long garden interview takes with burned-in caption commentary; numbered chapter cards ("1) New S11 Chipset" … "12) New VO2Max Test") impose listicle structure; his own swim/run/ride B-roll seeds the upcoming review.

Quotable moments

  • [00:28] "It's actually impressive how many more features there are than they showed in the keynote."
  • [01:07] "As always, a study published by the manufacturer of the thing that they're making. Who knows?"
  • [02:50] "Apple's been like the lone ranger in not including HRV, probably because the data wasn't so awesome."
  • [03:53] "And then here's one for the geeks: Apple's now exposing both the RMSSD as well as the SDNN data types for HRV." — health age uses SDNN; other features RMSSD.
  • [12:42] "If we learned anything about technology from the last few years, eventually things get broken and people find ways to get into things they weren't supposed to get into."
  • [13:13] "I watched a demo happen and it was astonishing. Like just boom, right there." — on the instant on-device Shazam.

Entities mentioned

  • People: dc-rainmaker
  • Companies: apple, Garmin, Samsung, Shazam, Hermès
  • Tools / products: apple-watch (Series 12, Ultra 4), S11 chip (secure Exclave), Apple Health app, Siri, Vitals app
  • Places: Apple Park (hands-on area)

Concepts surfaced

  • sdnn-vs-rmssd: Apple now exposes both HRV statistics, per-feature (Health Age → SDNN, others → RMSSD) — resolving the exact ambiguity rob-ter-horst flagged the same day.
  • manufacturer-study-skepticism: vendor-published accuracy studies deserve methodological scrutiny — here, comparing Apple's 5s HR sampling against competitors' 1s updates isn't apples-to-apples.
  • ambient-audio-privacy: 24/7 on-device conversation summarization trades utility for a permanent record; hardware isolation (secure Exclave, no raw-audio access, no speaker labels, non-quotable summaries) mitigates but doesn't remove the "eventually things get broken" risk.
  • readiness-score: intraday-updating 0-10 recovery score vs personal baseline; gated to new hardware because it needs the high-frequency HRV stream.
  • health-age: per-factor contributions displayed in years (sleep +1.3y), changes daily; cross-vendor comparison (Garmin vs Apple vs Whoop) is the next open question.
  • full-fidelity-recording-reduced-display: max-extended workout mode records 1s GPS + full HR but displays a 5-min rolling average — battery savings from the screen and radios, not the data.

[00:01] So, these are the brand new Apple Watch Series 12 watches. Watches that include
[00:03] Series 12 watches. Watches that include a whole slate of new features, both
[00:05] a whole slate of new features, both software and hardware, including a
[00:07] software and hardware, including a revamped optical heart rate sensor
[00:08] revamped optical heart rate sensor package that Apple says is the most
[00:10] package that Apple says is the most accurate optical heart rate sensor
[00:11] accurate optical heart rate sensor package on the market, including
[00:13] package on the market, including compared to a bunch of competitors. Top
[00:15] compared to a bunch of competitors. Top that, there's a new readiness score
[00:16] that, there's a new readiness score features, new microphones, a whole bunch
[00:18] features, new microphones, a whole bunch of other interesting things. Now, it's a
[00:20] of other interesting things. Now, it's a little bit crazy here right now, so
[00:22] little bit crazy here right now, so we're going to go somewhere a little bit
[00:23] we're going to go somewhere a little bit quieter to walk through all the new
[00:24] quieter to walk through all the new features. Okay, there are a ton of new
[00:26] features. Okay, there are a ton of new features. I've got a quieter place here
[00:27] features. I've got a quieter place here to walk through them. And it's actually
[00:29] to walk through them. And it's actually impressive how many more features there
[00:30] impressive how many more features there are than they showed in the keynote. So,
[00:32] are than they showed in the keynote. So, we're going to dive into all of those.
[00:33] we're going to dive into all of those. The very first one here is a new S11
[00:35] The very first one here is a new S11 chipset on the unit itself. And now,
[00:37] chipset on the unit itself. And now, this is shared across both the Ultra 4
[00:39] this is shared across both the Ultra 4 as well as a series 12. And there's one
[00:41] as well as a series 12. And there's one feature in particular, which is a new
[00:43] feature in particular, which is a new secure exclave, not Enclave, but Exclave
[00:46] secure exclave, not Enclave, but Exclave for audio processing. I'll dive into
[00:47] for audio processing. I'll dive into later on. That's probably going to be a
[00:49] later on. That's probably going to be a bit controversial. But first, I want to
[00:51] bit controversial. But first, I want to go into the new optical heart rate
[00:52] go into the new optical heart rate sensor package. That's a thing on the
[00:53] sensor package. That's a thing on the back there that measures your heart
[00:54] back there that measures your heart rate, but also does ECGs and plenty of
[00:57] rate, but also does ECGs and plenty of other things. Now, within that new
[00:58] other things. Now, within that new optical heart rate sensor, they're
[01:00] optical heart rate sensor, they're basically saying, not basically, they
[01:01] basically saying, not basically, they are straight up saying this is quote the
[01:03] are straight up saying this is quote the most accurate heart rate sensor in a
[01:04] most accurate heart rate sensor in a wearable today. And they've even
[01:06] wearable today. And they've even published a study to back that up. Now,
[01:08] published a study to back that up. Now, as always, a study published by the
[01:09] as always, a study published by the manufacturer of the thing that they're
[01:11] manufacturer of the thing that they're making. Who knows? But they've got a lot
[01:13] making. Who knows? But they've got a lot of good comparisons to other watches out
[01:15] of good comparisons to other watches out there. The 4970 from Garmin, for
[01:17] there. The 4970 from Garmin, for example, Samsung watches, etc. And
[01:19] example, Samsung watches, etc. And they're all modern watches. And the
[01:20] they're all modern watches. And the study was done this summer. Again, I'll
[01:22] study was done this summer. Again, I'll link to that down below if you want to
[01:23] link to that down below if you want to check it out. I will have my full length
[01:24] check it out. I will have my full length review like I've been doing for the last
[01:26] review like I've been doing for the last 15 years, diving into the accuracy and
[01:28] 15 years, diving into the accuracy and real world conditions like I always do.
[01:30] real world conditions like I always do. So stay tuned for that next week. Go a
[01:31] So stay tuned for that next week. Go a hit that subscribe button at the bottom
[01:33] hit that subscribe button at the bottom there so you get the notification as
[01:34] there so you get the notification as soon as that pops up. But let's first
[01:36] soon as that pops up. But let's first talk about what the changes in the
[01:37] talk about what the changes in the optical heart rate sensor. So there's
[01:39] optical heart rate sensor. So there's basically three core changes there. Uh
[01:41] basically three core changes there. Uh the very first one is the top layer
[01:43] the very first one is the top layer where the electrodes are used for ECGs.
[01:45] where the electrodes are used for ECGs. They've increased that by 24% the
[01:47] They've increased that by 24% the surface area of that. They've rearranged
[01:49] surface area of that. They've rearranged it entirely. It's like a new pedal
[01:50] it entirely. It's like a new pedal design if you will. And you can see that
[01:52] design if you will. And you can see that new design has 24% increase in the
[01:54] new design has 24% increase in the surface area. Below that, you've got the
[01:56] surface area. Below that, you've got the photo dyes themselves. Uh so the photo
[01:58] photo dyes themselves. Uh so the photo diets are primarily used from a workout
[02:00] diets are primarily used from a workout capture perspective. The old design had
[02:02] capture perspective. The old design had these four circular dots on it. This new
[02:04] these four circular dots on it. This new one has these eight windows with double
[02:06] one has these eight windows with double photo dodes inside of it. And then below
[02:07] photo dodes inside of it. And then below that there's an entirely new LED array.
[02:09] that there's an entirely new LED array. And it's within that LED array that
[02:11] And it's within that LED array that they're allowing themselves to go ahead
[02:12] they're allowing themselves to go ahead and increase the frequency of the heart
[02:14] and increase the frequency of the heart rate details, which I'll talk about in
[02:15] rate details, which I'll talk about in just a second here uh for the 24x7 as
[02:18] just a second here uh for the 24x7 as well as nighttime readings. So, with
[02:19] well as nighttime readings. So, with this sensor, they're significantly
[02:20] this sensor, they're significantly increasing the frequency of the heart
[02:22] increasing the frequency of the heart rate recordings. During daytime
[02:24] rate recordings. During daytime recording, uh, they're going to every 5
[02:25] recording, uh, they're going to every 5 seconds. Keeping in mind, in the past,
[02:27] seconds. Keeping in mind, in the past, it was every 5 minutes. So, they're
[02:29] it was every 5 minutes. So, they're increasing it by 60x. And then with this
[02:31] increasing it by 60x. And then with this new sensor, they're now finally
[02:32] new sensor, they're now finally recording HRV data at a much higher rate
[02:34] recording HRV data at a much higher rate than they used to in the past. In the
[02:35] than they used to in the past. In the past, it was like a couple times per
[02:37] past, it was like a couple times per night basically. Uh, now they're doing
[02:38] night basically. Uh, now they're doing it every 5 minutes uh throughout the
[02:40] it every 5 minutes uh throughout the night, but also, and I'll get to this in
[02:42] night, but also, and I'll get to this in just a second, the daytime as well,
[02:44] just a second, the daytime as well, which is super interesting. Now, with
[02:45] which is super interesting. Now, with the increase of the HRV frequency, they
[02:47] the increase of the HRV frequency, they are finally pulling in HRV data into
[02:49] are finally pulling in HRV data into your vitals app. Up until now, Apple's
[02:51] your vitals app. Up until now, Apple's been like the lone ranger in not
[02:52] been like the lone ranger in not including HRV, probably because the data
[02:54] including HRV, probably because the data wasn't so awesome. Now, they actually
[02:56] wasn't so awesome. Now, they actually have the data to pull that into the
[02:57] have the data to pull that into the vitals app. So, you'll see that in the
[02:58] vitals app. So, you'll see that in the morning as part of your vitals experienc
[03:05] HRV is part of that and that'll be part of your judged baseline for vitals. As
[03:08] of your judged baseline for vitals. As with other companies, there's an
[03:09] with other companies, there's an establishment period there. In this
[03:10] establishment period there. In this case, for Apple, that's 7 days you have
[03:12] case, for Apple, that's 7 days you have to wear it before you establish your HRV
[03:13] to wear it before you establish your HRV baseline. Uh the minimum number of sleep
[03:15] baseline. Uh the minimum number of sleep hours per night is 4 hours. After that,
[03:18] hours per night is 4 hours. After that, you can skip nights. That's not a big
[03:19] you can skip nights. That's not a big deal. But to establish that initial
[03:20] deal. But to establish that initial baseline, you have to have that data
[03:22] baseline, you have to have that data there. But interestingly, if you tap in
[03:23] there. But interestingly, if you tap in the upper right hand corner there, there
[03:25] the upper right hand corner there, there is a new daytime uh vitals section, and
[03:27] is a new daytime uh vitals section, and that includes your resting heart rate as
[03:29] that includes your resting heart rate as well as your HRV values that are taken
[03:31] well as your HRV values that are taken throughout the day. As far as I know,
[03:33] throughout the day. As far as I know, Apple is the only company doing HRV
[03:35] Apple is the only company doing HRV daytime reading from like a vital
[03:37] daytime reading from like a vital standpoint. Other companies are using
[03:39] standpoint. Other companies are using daytime HRV values for other things. But
[03:41] daytime HRV values for other things. But in terms of exposing that to the end
[03:43] in terms of exposing that to the end user, virtually every wearable in the
[03:44] user, virtually every wearable in the market today only does that at night,
[03:46] market today only does that at night, looking at your sleep data, just like
[03:47] looking at your sleep data, just like Apple's doing for the night portion. But
[03:48] Apple's doing for the night portion. But when you toggle over that little option
[03:50] when you toggle over that little option there, it shows you your daytime values,
[03:52] there, it shows you your daytime values, which will update during the day. And
[03:53] which will update during the day. And then here's one for the geeks. Uh
[03:55] then here's one for the geeks. Uh Apple's now exposing both the ARM SSD as
[03:57] Apple's now exposing both the ARM SSD as well as the SDNN data types for HRV. Uh
[04:00] well as the SDNN data types for HRV. Uh in the past, they only had one of those,
[04:02] in the past, they only had one of those, which led to all sorts of comparison
[04:03] which led to all sorts of comparison controversy. Now they are finally
[04:05] controversy. Now they are finally exposing both of them depending on which
[04:07] exposing both of them depending on which particular thing they are measuring. Uh
[04:09] particular thing they are measuring. Uh so certain things like health age is
[04:10] so certain things like health age is using SDNN. We'll talk about health age
[04:12] using SDNN. We'll talk about health age in just a second versus other things are
[04:14] in just a second versus other things are using RMSSD. So again more on that in
[04:16] using RMSSD. So again more on that in the fullness review down the road. But I
[04:18] the fullness review down the road. But I know some of you geeks will appreciate
[04:19] know some of you geeks will appreciate that little notable there. And all that
[04:20] that little notable there. And all that stuff is recorded to the Apple Health
[04:22] stuff is recorded to the Apple Health app. So third party apps can access that
[04:24] app. So third party apps can access that as well in the applicable format type.
[04:26] as well in the applicable format type. Now with the HRV piece, Apple's letting
[04:28] Now with the HRV piece, Apple's letting up a readiness score. Uh so very much
[04:30] up a readiness score. Uh so very much like every other company in the wearable
[04:32] like every other company in the wearable space now that has readiness score,
[04:33] space now that has readiness score, Apple's adding their own. This score
[04:35] Apple's adding their own. This score you'll get each morning on both the
[04:36] you'll get each morning on both the watch as well as the phone. Uh and it'll
[04:38] watch as well as the phone. Uh and it'll also update throughout the day. For
[04:39] also update throughout the day. For example, if you do a hard workout, your
[04:41] example, if you do a hard workout, your score will decrease because you're less
[04:42] score will decrease because you're less ready to train. And then likewise, if
[04:44] ready to train. And then likewise, if you take a nap after a red eye flight,
[04:45] you take a nap after a red eye flight, your score might increase because now
[04:47] your score might increase because now you're more ready to train, more ready
[04:48] you're more ready to train, more ready to take on the day uh because of that
[04:50] to take on the day uh because of that nap. Now the score essentially has a
[04:52] nap. Now the score essentially has a couple different components. The first
[04:54] couple different components. The first component is the score number itself.
[04:56] component is the score number itself. That is a number between 0 and 10. Uh,
[04:58] That is a number between 0 and 10. Uh, so if you have a really bad night of
[04:59] so if you have a really bad night of sleep or no sleep at all, you might get
[05:01] sleep or no sleep at all, you might get closer to a zero. In a well recover from
[05:03] closer to a zero. In a well recover from last workouts, you might get closer to a
[05:04] last workouts, you might get closer to a 10. Within that, you're assigned four
[05:06] 10. Within that, you're assigned four different categories. They are recover,
[05:08] different categories. They are recover, pace yourself, ready, and go for it. And
[05:10] pace yourself, ready, and go for it. And for each one of those categories, you
[05:12] for each one of those categories, you can then go ahead and see the details of
[05:14] can then go ahead and see the details of why it's giving you that score. And the
[05:15] why it's giving you that score. And the reason it's going to give you that score
[05:17] reason it's going to give you that score is based on factory below that. So that
[05:19] is based on factory below that. So that includes your activity ring uh progress,
[05:21] includes your activity ring uh progress, your actual workouts, including your
[05:22] your actual workouts, including your training load, as well as your overnight
[05:24] training load, as well as your overnight vitals, and your sleep score. So all
[05:26] vitals, and your sleep score. So all those things are pulled together. Again,
[05:27] those things are pulled together. Again, very similar to what other companies are
[05:29] very similar to what other companies are doing in the space where you're pulling
[05:30] doing in the space where you're pulling in essentially those core areas of
[05:31] in essentially those core areas of recovery from workouts, your sleep
[05:33] recovery from workouts, your sleep stats, uh, and then how it compares to
[05:35] stats, uh, and then how it compares to your baseline. And again, this is all
[05:37] your baseline. And again, this is all compared to your individual baseline.
[05:38] compared to your individual baseline. So, your HRV data is compared to your
[05:40] So, your HRV data is compared to your own HRV historical data as opposed to
[05:43] own HRV historical data as opposed to someone else. And it's why you need that
[05:44] someone else. And it's why you need that 7 days of HRV data to work with. Now,
[05:46] 7 days of HRV data to work with. Now, the readiness score here is only going
[05:48] the readiness score here is only going to be available for the new Apple Watch
[05:49] to be available for the new Apple Watch Series 12 as well as the Ultra 4 watches
[05:51] Series 12 as well as the Ultra 4 watches because it requires the HRV pieces. Uh,
[05:54] because it requires the HRV pieces. Uh, but there is also a new health app
[05:56] but there is also a new health app redesign coming later on this year.
[05:58] redesign coming later on this year. There's no exact time frame other than
[06:00] There's no exact time frame other than later on 2026. And there is a ton of new
[06:03] later on 2026. And there is a ton of new features in here. Uh, features that
[06:04] features in here. Uh, features that extend more than just a typical UI
[06:06] extend more than just a typical UI redesign would encompass. So, starting
[06:08] redesign would encompass. So, starting at the very top of some of the
[06:09] at the very top of some of the screenshots you see right there, there's
[06:11] screenshots you see right there, there's AI summaries. These summaries include
[06:12] AI summaries. These summaries include recommendations uh, based on AI from
[06:15] recommendations uh, based on AI from Apple's intelligence. So, in that Apple
[06:16] Apple's intelligence. So, in that Apple intelligence summary, you'll see things
[06:18] intelligence summary, you'll see things like suggesting interval workouts, for
[06:19] like suggesting interval workouts, for example. Though, it won't give you a
[06:21] example. Though, it won't give you a structured workout on the watch to do.
[06:22] structured workout on the watch to do. It's just going to tell you to go figure
[06:24] It's just going to tell you to go figure that out for yourself. Note that you
[06:25] that out for yourself. Note that you will have to have a compatible Apple
[06:27] will have to have a compatible Apple intelligence phone for this. So, these
[06:28] intelligence phone for this. So, these next features here do not require a new
[06:30] next features here do not require a new Apple Watch, but they do have to have a
[06:32] Apple Watch, but they do have to have a phone that has Apple intelligence on it.
[06:34] phone that has Apple intelligence on it. So, basically, a phone from the last
[06:36] So, basically, a phone from the last couple years. One of the things you'll
[06:37] couple years. One of the things you'll see is a new tab called longevity.
[06:39] see is a new tab called longevity. Longevity is pulling in a bunch of
[06:40] Longevity is pulling in a bunch of different factors and starting to
[06:42] different factors and starting to summarize that data up to you. So,
[06:43] summarize that data up to you. So, again, really trying to make a cohesive
[06:44] again, really trying to make a cohesive picture of your health. Now, those seven
[06:46] picture of your health. Now, those seven factors include nutrition, metabolic
[06:48] factors include nutrition, metabolic movement, sleep, hearing, heart, and
[06:50] movement, sleep, hearing, heart, and mental well-being. Uh now from there
[06:52] mental well-being. Uh now from there you're going to see a new health age.
[06:53] you're going to see a new health age. Now health age is based on your sleep,
[06:55] Now health age is based on your sleep, your V2 max, your HV, your heart rate,
[06:58] your V2 max, your HV, your heart rate, your exercise minutes, your steps, and
[06:59] your exercise minutes, your steps, and optionally lab work that you can pull
[07:01] optionally lab work that you can pull in. That's cuz you can now pull in lab
[07:02] in. That's cuz you can now pull in lab work uh either through one of Apple's
[07:04] work uh either through one of Apple's partners or you can simply manually
[07:05] partners or you can simply manually enter that lab work in. And that health
[07:07] enter that lab work in. And that health wage will change daily based on your
[07:09] wage will change daily based on your sleep time and all sorts of other
[07:10] sleep time and all sorts of other factors. Uh so very similar again other
[07:13] factors. Uh so very similar again other companies health age options. It'll be
[07:14] companies health age options. It'll be interesting to see how these all
[07:15] interesting to see how these all compare. Like if I have a Garmin watch
[07:17] compare. Like if I have a Garmin watch and an Apple Watch and a Woot Band and
[07:19] and an Apple Watch and a Woot Band and so I've got all those right now. After
[07:20] so I've got all those right now. After that, you're also going to get a new V2
[07:22] that, you're also going to get a new V2 max test option. So this test can
[07:24] max test option. So this test can actually be done like in your living
[07:25] actually be done like in your living room. It's a 5minute test with the 1
[07:27] room. It's a 5minute test with the 1 minute cool down. It's a guided test
[07:29] minute cool down. It's a guided test using your phone in combination with
[07:31] using your phone in combination with your watch. Now again, you have to have
[07:32] your watch. Now again, you have to have a newer phone that supports Apple
[07:33] a newer phone that supports Apple intelligence, but you don't necessarily
[07:35] intelligence, but you don't necessarily have to have one of the new watches to
[07:36] have to have one of the new watches to pull this off. This V2 max test is going
[07:38] pull this off. This V2 max test is going to ramp up over the course of 5 minutes.
[07:39] to ramp up over the course of 5 minutes. Again, all within your living room.
[07:41] Again, all within your living room. though it only gets so painful in 5
[07:43] though it only gets so painful in 5 minutes in your living room and then
[07:44] minutes in your living room and then give you a score based on that. But
[07:46] give you a score based on that. But that's actually not the only new test
[07:47] that's actually not the only new test that's included in the new Apple Health
[07:49] that's included in the new Apple Health features. There's also ones here for
[07:51] features. There's also ones here for flexibility, movement mechanics,
[07:52] flexibility, movement mechanics, strength, and again all these new
[07:54] strength, and again all these new metrics are coming in the revamped Apple
[07:55] metrics are coming in the revamped Apple Health app that'll arrive later on this
[07:57] Health app that'll arrive later on this year. Now, I want to go back to the
[07:59] year. Now, I want to go back to the watch itself cuz there's a bunch of new
[08:01] watch itself cuz there's a bunch of new modes. Now, before we talk about the
[08:02] modes. Now, before we talk about the audio intelligence features that'll be
[08:04] audio intelligence features that'll be controversial, I want to briefly talk
[08:05] controversial, I want to briefly talk about some new modes for GPS time uh on
[08:08] about some new modes for GPS time uh on the different watches. So, there is a
[08:10] the different watches. So, there is a new extended mode and a new max extended
[08:12] new extended mode and a new max extended mode that get increased battery life.
[08:14] mode that get increased battery life. And in case of the new extended mode,
[08:15] And in case of the new extended mode, that's basically to go ahead and turn
[08:16] that's basically to go ahead and turn off the always on display and turn off
[08:18] off the always on display and turn off running for metrics, but everything else
[08:20] running for metrics, but everything else is the same. Full fidelity GPS data at
[08:22] is the same. Full fidelity GPS data at every 1 second, so you're not losing
[08:24] every 1 second, so you're not losing anything there. Cellular data also gets
[08:26] anything there. Cellular data also gets bashed a little bit in some of the
[08:27] bashed a little bit in some of the operations, but otherwise, it's a fully
[08:28] operations, but otherwise, it's a fully functional wad. So, the next you have
[08:30] functional wad. So, the next you have the new max extended mode. What's cool
[08:32] the new max extended mode. What's cool here is it's not reducing the GPS
[08:33] here is it's not reducing the GPS frequency of the track point, so that
[08:35] frequency of the track point, so that remains at every 1 second. Uh on the
[08:37] remains at every 1 second. Uh on the heart rate side, that's also recording
[08:39] heart rate side, that's also recording the data in full fidelity, except
[08:40] the data in full fidelity, except instead of showing you that data in full
[08:42] instead of showing you that data in full fidelity, they're going to reduce that
[08:43] fidelity, they're going to reduce that to a 5minute rolling average that
[08:45] to a 5minute rolling average that they're going to show you on the screen.
[08:47] they're going to show you on the screen. Like with the extended mode, it's not
[08:48] Like with the extended mode, it's not always on display. There's also no
[08:50] always on display. There's also no splits and no alerts and no custom
[08:52] splits and no alerts and no custom workouts. It's very similar to what used
[08:54] workouts. It's very similar to what used to be the reduced profile, but now it's
[08:55] to be the reduced profile, but now it's been renamed to Mac extended and then
[08:57] been renamed to Mac extended and then tweaked a bit to make it more viable.
[08:59] tweaked a bit to make it more viable. So, that stuff's all super cool, but now
[09:00] So, that stuff's all super cool, but now we got to dive into the audio
[09:02] we got to dive into the audio intelligence features. Uh, now this is
[09:04] intelligence features. Uh, now this is going to leverage that S11 chipset on
[09:05] going to leverage that S11 chipset on the watch itself with the new secure
[09:07] the watch itself with the new secure exclave that's going to process the
[09:09] exclave that's going to process the audio in this little bit of the chipset.
[09:10] audio in this little bit of the chipset. So, it's going to do this 24 by7 unless
[09:13] So, it's going to do this 24 by7 unless you configure it. We'll talk about
[09:14] you configure it. We'll talk about configuring it in just a second. And
[09:16] configuring it in just a second. And this is where people are going to think
[09:17] this is where people are going to think this is really cool tech, but maybe I
[09:19] this is really cool tech, but maybe I don't necessarily want this in my life.
[09:21] don't necessarily want this in my life. So, there are four features that are
[09:23] So, there are four features that are part of this, four core things, and each
[09:24] part of this, four core things, and each one of them has a bunch of different
[09:25] one of them has a bunch of different things underneath it. The very first one
[09:27] things underneath it. The very first one is kind of a simplistic one, which is
[09:28] is kind of a simplistic one, which is sound recognition. So, if you have a
[09:30] sound recognition. So, if you have a hearing disability, for example, this
[09:31] hearing disability, for example, this can identify things like a doorbell or a
[09:34] can identify things like a doorbell or a baby's crying or sirens or things like
[09:36] baby's crying or sirens or things like that and then notify you on your watch
[09:37] that and then notify you on your watch so you can see that. The second piece
[09:39] so you can see that. The second piece then is called live rewind. What this
[09:41] then is called live rewind. What this allows you to do is to get a recap of
[09:43] allows you to do is to get a recap of the last 15 seconds of audio in text on
[09:45] the last 15 seconds of audio in text on your watch. All you do is just simply
[09:47] your watch. All you do is just simply raise your wrist, you double press the
[09:48] raise your wrist, you double press the digital crown, and then it gives you a
[09:50] digital crown, and then it gives you a text recap the last 15 seconds. A good
[09:52] text recap the last 15 seconds. A good example here in the keynote is this
[09:54] example here in the keynote is this moment in the restaurant where they're
[09:55] moment in the restaurant where they're basically trying to understand what the
[09:57] basically trying to understand what the waiter said. And you can do this anytime
[09:58] waiter said. And you can do this anytime you want. Now, once you have that recap,
[10:00] you want. Now, once you have that recap, a couple things to note. One is it's not
[10:02] a couple things to note. One is it's not recording the live audio itself. Uh,
[10:04] recording the live audio itself. Uh, two, at the bottom there, there are two
[10:05] two, at the bottom there, there are two options you can choose. The first is to
[10:07] options you can choose. The first is to go ahead and ask Siri about that
[10:09] go ahead and ask Siri about that particular thing that happened. So,
[10:10] particular thing that happened. So, basically takes that 15 seconds and
[10:12] basically takes that 15 seconds and sends it over the Siri app and you can
[10:13] sends it over the Siri app and you can do whatever you want with it. Or two,
[10:14] do whatever you want with it. Or two, you can save it in the Siri app and go
[10:16] you can save it in the Siri app and go ahead and leave that for later on. Later
[10:18] ahead and leave that for later on. Later on is interesting cuz that gets into the
[10:19] on is interesting cuz that gets into the Siri recap feature. This is the piece
[10:21] Siri recap feature. This is the piece that's going to get controversial. So,
[10:23] that's going to get controversial. So, this piece here is recording your
[10:24] this piece here is recording your conversations 24x7 in your watch itself.
[10:28] conversations 24x7 in your watch itself. And then from there, it'll recap those
[10:30] And then from there, it'll recap those conversations over the course of the
[10:31] conversations over the course of the day. So if you went to a parent teacher
[10:33] day. So if you went to a parent teacher meeting with a bunch of people there, it
[10:35] meeting with a bunch of people there, it would recap those conversations. If you
[10:36] would recap those conversations. If you had work meetings, it would recap those
[10:37] had work meetings, it would recap those conversations. So there's a bunch of
[10:39] conversations. So there's a bunch of protections Apple talked about in a
[10:40] protections Apple talked about in a keynote. You can see them right there
[10:41] keynote. You can see them right there summarized, but I want to kind of go
[10:42] summarized, but I want to kind of go through what those mean in real life. Uh
[10:44] through what those mean in real life. Uh so the first one is that you can't
[10:46] so the first one is that you can't access the recordings in any way, shape,
[10:47] access the recordings in any way, shape, or form for this. You can't actually
[10:48] or form for this. You can't actually listen to the raw audio recordings. Uh
[10:50] listen to the raw audio recordings. Uh they're securely in there. Apple can't
[10:52] they're securely in there. Apple can't even get to them, they're saying, as
[10:53] even get to them, they're saying, as well. So you can't just go and play back
[10:54] well. So you can't just go and play back those audio recordings. As I said, that
[10:56] those audio recordings. As I said, that AI summary is happening essentially real
[10:58] AI summary is happening essentially real time on the watch itself using that S11
[11:00] time on the watch itself using that S11 chipset. The next thing is there's no
[11:02] chipset. The next thing is there's no speaker annotation. In other words, it
[11:04] speaker annotation. In other words, it does not denote which person is
[11:05] does not denote which person is speaking. It has not said Ray said this
[11:07] speaking. It has not said Ray said this or Dez says this or Bobby says this.
[11:09] or Dez says this or Bobby says this. None of that happens. It's simply
[11:10] None of that happens. It's simply recapping the conversations as factual
[11:12] recapping the conversations as factual of these things were discussed and here
[11:15] of these things were discussed and here is what is shown there. The exception to
[11:17] is what is shown there. The exception to that is if they're talking about a
[11:19] that is if they're talking about a person and that person is named, then it
[11:20] person and that person is named, then it could go ahead and name that person in
[11:22] could go ahead and name that person in the recap summaries. If it's, you know,
[11:24] the recap summaries. If it's, you know, John Doe how to go do this, John Doe
[11:26] John Doe how to go do this, John Doe should go do this. That is like a
[11:27] should go do this. That is like a meeting note style recap that would be
[11:29] meeting note style recap that would be in there. Now, when you enable this
[11:30] in there. Now, when you enable this feature, all four of the features, I
[11:31] feature, all four of the features, I still got the fourth one to talk about
[11:32] still got the fourth one to talk about here. Uh, you can choose to enable
[11:34] here. Uh, you can choose to enable disable any given feature at any point
[11:36] disable any given feature at any point in time. And in the case of Siri recap,
[11:38] in time. And in the case of Siri recap, when you enable that, you're essentially
[11:39] when you enable that, you're essentially doing an onboarding flow very similar to
[11:41] doing an onboarding flow very similar to the focus modes where you say this
[11:43] the focus modes where you say this feature will be enabled at home or at
[11:44] feature will be enabled at home or at work or not at home or not at work or
[11:46] work or not at home or not at work or there's certain times of the day or only
[11:48] there's certain times of the day or only certain days or whatever the case is.
[11:50] certain days or whatever the case is. Lots of customization there into how you
[11:51] Lots of customization there into how you enable this feature. So you do or do not
[11:53] enable this feature. So you do or do not capture certain places or certain times
[11:55] capture certain places or certain times of the day etc. Now what's interesting
[11:57] of the day etc. Now what's interesting about this whole thing is it will never
[11:58] about this whole thing is it will never transcribe an actual conversation in a
[12:00] transcribe an actual conversation in a quotable way. It's always going to be
[12:02] quotable way. It's always going to be summaries. So you couldn't use it like
[12:03] summaries. So you couldn't use it like from a coral O standpoint and saying
[12:05] from a coral O standpoint and saying this person said XYZ because it's right
[12:07] this person said XYZ because it's right here my watch said so. The exception to
[12:10] here my watch said so. The exception to that though is the 15-second live rewind
[12:12] that though is the 15-second live rewind option. One of the two options is to
[12:14] option. One of the two options is to send it to Siri. And when you send a
[12:15] send it to Siri. And when you send a 15-second transcription over to Siri, it
[12:18] 15-second transcription over to Siri, it will be included as the exact quotable
[12:20] will be included as the exact quotable text in your Siri recap of the day. And
[12:23] text in your Siri recap of the day. And ultimately, I'm not really sure how I
[12:25] ultimately, I'm not really sure how I feel about all this. Like, I think it's
[12:26] feel about all this. Like, I think it's beneficial in lots of settings where you
[12:28] beneficial in lots of settings where you want to basically summarize the
[12:29] want to basically summarize the conversation essentially having a
[12:30] conversation essentially having a notetaker like many people use today,
[12:32] notetaker like many people use today, but to have this on 24x7, like
[12:34] but to have this on 24x7, like documenting all the things that are
[12:36] documenting all the things that are going on in my life, I'm not super
[12:39] going on in my life, I'm not super jazzed about that. maybe I'll change my
[12:41] jazzed about that. maybe I'll change my mind down the road, but at the end of
[12:42] mind down the road, but at the end of the day, I think we learned anything
[12:43] the day, I think we learned anything about technology from the last few years
[12:44] about technology from the last few years that eventually things get broken and
[12:46] that eventually things get broken and people find ways to get into things they
[12:47] people find ways to get into things they weren't supposed to get into. And so,
[12:49] weren't supposed to get into. And so, and so I'm not sure if I really love the
[12:50] and so I'm not sure if I really love the idea of people having a summary of every
[12:52] idea of people having a summary of every single thing I uttered 24 by7 to myself,
[12:55] single thing I uttered 24 by7 to myself, my wife, my kids, or whatever it may be.
[12:56] my wife, my kids, or whatever it may be. In any case, the final thing that's on
[12:58] In any case, the final thing that's on this list of four items is actually
[13:00] this list of four items is actually pretty cool, which is a much much faster
[13:02] pretty cool, which is a much much faster Shazam experience. So now because it's
[13:04] Shazam experience. So now because it's constantly basically analyzing audio in
[13:06] constantly basically analyzing audio in the background. The moment you hear
[13:07] the background. The moment you hear music in the background and you raise
[13:09] music in the background and you raise your wrist, it's going to show you the
[13:10] your wrist, it's going to show you the name of that song right then and there.
[13:12] name of that song right then and there. It's literally as simple as that. I
[13:13] It's literally as simple as that. I watched a demo happen and it was
[13:15] watched a demo happen and it was astonishing. Like just boom, right there
[13:17] astonishing. Like just boom, right there because it's processing that 24x7. So
[13:20] because it's processing that 24x7. So then I got to like my first question
[13:21] then I got to like my first question about it. It's like what's the battery
[13:22] about it. It's like what's the battery hit on all this behind the scenes 24x7
[13:25] hit on all this behind the scenes 24x7 processing? Uh and that's where they
[13:27] processing? Uh and that's where they basically said hey beta is coming later
[13:28] basically said hey beta is coming later this year and that's when we'll talk
[13:29] this year and that's when we'll talk more about those battery pieces and how
[13:31] more about those battery pieces and how it impacts things. But this is included
[13:33] it impacts things. But this is included in their battery claims of 24 hours in
[13:36] in their battery claims of 24 hours in the case of the series 12 watch. So
[13:37] the case of the series 12 watch. So we'll have to see about that. But what's
[13:38] we'll have to see about that. But what's interesting on the Shazam piece in
[13:40] interesting on the Shazam piece in particular is historically speaking
[13:42] particular is historically speaking basically they would record an audio
[13:43] basically they would record an audio snippet, send it to Shazam and it'll
[13:44] snippet, send it to Shazam and it'll come back again. Now they're basically
[13:46] come back again. Now they're basically making audio signature on the device and
[13:48] making audio signature on the device and sending just that tiny little signature
[13:50] sending just that tiny little signature file off to Shazam and back which is why
[13:52] file off to Shazam and back which is why it's essentially instant when you look
[13:53] it's essentially instant when you look at it. Now the last thing to note in the
[13:55] at it. Now the last thing to note in the case of Series 12, it receives a new
[13:57] case of Series 12, it receives a new stronger display, 60% stronger than the
[13:59] stronger display, 60% stronger than the past. Now, from a pricing standpoint,
[14:01] past. Now, from a pricing standpoint, the Apple Watch Series 12 remains at
