Verdict: good-but-buggy-launch

TL;DR

  • DC Rainmaker (Ray) reviews the $199 Garmin CIRQA screenless band after weeks of testing (himself and his wife) across running, cycling, swimming, hot and cold weather โ€” framing everything as "reality vs expectations" set by Whoop, Fitbit Air, Amazfit Helio, and Polar Loop.
  • No subscription required โ€” the entire review uses the free Garmin Connect tier. The killer differentiator: automatic exercise detection can auto-start phone GPS per sport profile, which no competing band does; but early bike-commute detection missed rides, and a missed detection means lost training load with no way to recover it (unlike Whoop/Fitbit, which accrue load 24/7).
  • Heart rate accuracy (Gen 4 sensor + skin temp layer) matches competitors overall โ€” great in warm weather, rougher in cold Newfoundland rides, and it repeatedly fell apart on his 400m interval runs (three attempts, all failed; a friend in warm weather was fine).
  • Battery is the real Gen 4 story, not accuracy: claimed 10 days, real-world hit-or-miss (some days burn 30%), versus Whoop reliably hitting its 14-day claim. Ray predicts a custom Gen 6 sensor is what this product line actually needs.
  • Verdict: a good device with an unusually buggy, unpolished launch (dedicated bug section โ€” a bad sign by his own convention). Recommended for anyone wanting screenless 24/7 tracking, not just Garmin ecosystem people โ€” but not for Ray himself, who prefers his Fenix watch.

Key moments

  • [00:01] Hook โ€” CIRQA on wrist, promise to test "reality vs expectations" against Whoop/Fitbit Air/Amazfit/Polar Loop expectations (frame_0001.jpg).
  • [00:44] Pricing โ€” $199, four colors, optional bicep band in two sizes, and no subscription required (review uses free tier only).
  • [01:11] Hardware tour โ€” pod + strap, side button (manual workouts, HR broadcast, alarm dismiss), Gen 4 optical HR sensor with added skin-temp layer, standard Garmin charge port; band-swap pins called the fiddliest part (frame_0042.jpg).
  • [02:14] Size comparison โ€” side-by-side on his wife's wrist vs Amazfit Helio, Fitbit Air, Whoop 5.0 (frame_0036.jpg, frame_0040.jpg); "good internet meme fodder, but meh, shrug."
  • [04:28] Daily metrics & app โ€” near-parity with a high-end Garmin watch; new Essentials tab criticized for only 6 tile choices (frame_0060.jpg).
  • [06:56] Sleep philosophy โ€” wrist beats bicep for sleep times; he deliberately does not judge sleep stages because reference wearables are only ~80% accurate themselves.
  • [10:04] Workout tracking, three ways โ€” auto, button, or app; live HR in the free tier only exists because "the internet went wild, and we won" โ€” Garmin reversed the Connect Plus paywall in 3 days ([10:51]).
  • [12:39] The unique feature โ€” auto exercise detection can auto-start phone GPS per sport profile; no other band does this.
  • [14:11] The costly failure mode โ€” an auto-detected mountain ride ended itself mid-ride; missed detection = permanently lost training load, unlike Whoop/Fitbit's 24/7 load accrual ([15:56]).
  • [18:39] Battery reality โ€” claimed 10 days; real world hit-or-miss (10%/day some days, 30% others); Whoop hits its 14-day claim every time.
  • [21:05] Accuracy roundup โ€” solid steady-state and warm-weather results, cold/rainy rides rougher, 400m intervals failed three separate times ([22:30]).
  • [23:31] Bugs section โ€” "the bugs on this device are a lot"; blames Garmin's shrunken external tester pool; most will be fixed fast but shouldn't have shipped.
  • [24:33] Verdict โ€” good device, for everyone not just Garmin people; personally sticking with his Fenix watch ([26:17]).

Hook pattern: product-in-hand credibility tease. Opens on the CIRQA worn on his raised wrist, face peeking around it (frame_0001.jpg) โ€” the product IS the first shot. Words stack testing credentials fast: "putting through its paces... both myself as well as my wife... cycling and running and swimming... hot temperatures as well as cold" โ€” cold being a deliberate plant paid off later by the Newfoundland failures. At ~6-8s the edit cuts to action B-roll (trail running frame_0002.jpg, gravel cycling frame_0004.jpg), visually proving the testing claims as they're spoken. The actual thesis lands at 0:18: "how reality differs from expectation," naming the expectation-setters (Whoop, Fitbit Air, Amazfit, Polar Loop). It's a promise-of-rigor hook, tuned around a tension frame (expectations vs reality) rather than a question.

Editorial profile

  • Cuts/min: 2.99
  • Mean shot length: 20.05s
  • Median shot length: 4.43s
  • Talking-head ratio: n/a (opencv not installed)

Fast-cut B-roll-dense review (~3 cuts/min average but heavily front-loaded): workshop talking-head anchor interleaved with real-workout footage, hands-on product macro shots, app screen recordings, and burned-in data-table overlays; on-screen captions carry the numbers.

Quotable moments

  • [02:16] "Yes, it's like good internet meme fodder, but at the end of the day, meh, shrug." (on the size complaints)
  • [10:57] "The internet went wild, and we won. 3 days later, Garmin changed it." (live HR freed from the Connect Plus paywall)
  • [16:13] "If it isn't detected, there's no training load and no way to get it back."
  • [19:14] "There's no way though I'm getting the 10 days of battery life with this."
  • [23:31] "The bugs on this device are a lot."
  • [26:02] "I don't buy the idea this is only for Garmin people. It's for everyone."

Entities mentioned

  • People: dc-rainmaker (Ray, host), dezfit (fellow YouTuber, interval retest)
  • Companies: garmin, whoop, fitbit, amazfit, polar, oura, strava, trainingpeaks, peloton, zwift
  • Tools / products: garmin-cirqa, whoop-strap, fitbit-air, amazfit-helio, polar-loop, garmin-fenix, garmin-elevate-gen4, garmin-elevate-gen5, garmin-connect-plus, garmin-index-band, phoenix-8
  • Places: newfoundland (cold-weather testing), spain (warm-weather testing), london (step-count tourist day)

Concepts surfaced

  • expectations-vs-reality-review: structuring a review as a delta against expectations set by category incumbents, not against a spec sheet.
  • training-load-capture-gap: event-gated load tracking (Garmin) loses data permanently on missed detections; continuous 24/7 load models (Whoop/Fitbit) can't miss.
  • sensor-power-gating: the device raises optical HR sensor power only during detected activity to hit battery claims โ€” accuracy and battery are one coupled trade-off.
  • hardware-repurposing-mismatch: a sensor designed for watches (Gen 4) is an "awkward fit" in a 24/7 band; the category needs purpose-built silicon (his Gen 6 prediction).
  • reference-device-honesty: refusing to grade sleep stages against a reference that's itself only ~80% accurate.
  • launch-polish-signal: "if I have a dedicated bug section, that means it was pretty rough" โ€” reviewer meta-signal for launch quality; tied to Garmin shrinking its external tester pool.
  • community-pressure-wins: public reviewer pushback reversed the live-HR paywall in 3 days.

[00:02] This is the brand new Garmin Circa. A device I've been putting through its
[00:03] device I've been putting through its paces over the last little while both
[00:05] paces over the last little while both myself as well as my wife across all
[00:07] myself as well as my wife across all sorts of different workout and
[00:08] sorts of different workout and non-workout scenarios. This includes
[00:10] non-workout scenarios. This includes cycling and running and swimming and all
[00:12] cycling and running and swimming and all sorts of other things in both hot
[00:14] sorts of other things in both hot temperatures as well as cold
[00:15] temperatures as well as cold temperatures because that will matter
[00:16] temperatures because that will matter more in that just a moment to see how
[00:18] more in that just a moment to see how reality differs from expectation [music]
[00:20] reality differs from expectation [music] because there is a lot of expectation
[00:22] because there is a lot of expectation when it comes to the Garmin Circa band.
[00:24] when it comes to the Garmin Circa band. Much of that expectation built up based
[00:26] Much of that expectation built up based on years of experience with the Whoop
[00:27] on years of experience with the Whoop band or the newer Fitbit Air band or
[00:30] band or the newer Fitbit Air band or even people's experience with something
[00:31] even people's experience with something like the Amazfit Helio band or Helio
[00:33] like the Amazfit Helio band or Helio band or the Polar Loop as well. I've
[00:36] band or the Polar Loop as well. I've been testing all these devices side by
[00:38] been testing all these devices side by side even having the bicep band as well
[00:40] side even having the bicep band as well with another device to see how those
[00:42] with another device to see how those things differ. So without just simply
[00:43] things differ. So without just simply get right into it. First up, the price
[00:45] get right into it. First up, the price is $199. Doesn't matter which color you
[00:47] is $199. Doesn't matter which color you have. There's like four different core
[00:49] have. There's like four different core colors and a bunch of different
[00:50] colors and a bunch of different accessory bands that you can also buy
[00:51] accessory bands that you can also buy extra. Most notably, there's also a
[00:54] extra. Most notably, there's also a bicep band or arm band option currently
[00:56] bicep band or arm band option currently that you can buy both a smaller size as
[00:57] that you can buy both a smaller size as well as a larger size. We'll talk about
[00:59] well as a larger size. We'll talk about that more just a second. Next from a
[01:01] that more just a second. Next from a subscription standpoint, this device
[01:02] subscription standpoint, this device requires no subscription at all. I do
[01:04] requires no subscription at all. I do not have Garmin Connect Plus enabled on
[01:05] not have Garmin Connect Plus enabled on my account at all. So everything you see
[01:07] my account at all. So everything you see in this entire review is based on the
[01:09] in this entire review is based on the free version. So with those simple
[01:10] free version. So with those simple pricing bits out of the way, let's talk
[01:12] pricing bits out of the way, let's talk about the hardware. Inside the box
[01:14] about the hardware. Inside the box itself, you've got the strap. You've got
[01:15] itself, you've got the strap. You've got the pod already attached to the strap.
[01:17] the pod already attached to the strap. You've got the Garmin charging cable,
[01:18] You've got the Garmin charging cable, the standard one that you would have for
[01:20] the standard one that you would have for any sort of Garmin watch for example as
[01:22] any sort of Garmin watch for example as well as some paper stuff that you're
[01:23] well as some paper stuff that you're probably not going to read. So then
[01:25] probably not going to read. So then looking at the band itself, there's
[01:26] looking at the band itself, there's basically two pieces to it. There's the
[01:28] basically two pieces to it. There's the pod piece that you see right here.
[01:29] pod piece that you see right here. That's the plastic piece portion right
[01:31] That's the plastic piece portion right there. And then there's a band that you
[01:32] there. And then there's a band that you can remove here using those little pins
[01:34] can remove here using those little pins that you see at the bottom there. Then
[01:36] that you see at the bottom there. Then on the side there, you have this button.
[01:38] on the side there, you have this button. The button allows you to start and stop
[01:39] The button allows you to start and stop activities manually. It allows you to go
[01:41] activities manually. It allows you to go ahead and enable heart rate broadcasting
[01:42] ahead and enable heart rate broadcasting to devices like a Peloton or Zwift or
[01:44] to devices like a Peloton or Zwift or whatever you may want. It also allows
[01:46] whatever you may want. It also allows you to go ahead and dismiss a alarm in
[01:48] you to go ahead and dismiss a alarm in the morning like a snooze wake up alarm
[01:49] the morning like a snooze wake up alarm because it has a vibration motor inside.
[01:52] because it has a vibration motor inside. From a size standpoint, here's how that
[01:53] From a size standpoint, here's how that looks side by side compared to other
[01:55] looks side by side compared to other units. It's in the same general ballpark
[01:57] units. It's in the same general ballpark as a Whoop band from a width
[01:58] as a Whoop band from a width perspective, but from a length like
[02:00] perspective, but from a length like going across your wrist like this, it's
[02:02] going across your wrist like this, it's definitely a little bit longer. I don't
[02:03] definitely a little bit longer. I don't tend to notice it on myself having worn
[02:06] tend to notice it on myself having worn all these bands, some of them for many,
[02:07] all these bands, some of them for many, many years. Obviously, the Fitbit air
[02:09] many years. Obviously, the Fitbit air band is much, much smaller than Whoop or
[02:11] band is much, much smaller than Whoop or Garmin, for example, but overall like
[02:13] Garmin, for example, but overall like the size doesn't have any impact on my
[02:14] the size doesn't have any impact on my daily life. Uh yes, it's like good
[02:16] daily life. Uh yes, it's like good internet meme fodder, but at the end of
[02:18] internet meme fodder, but at the end of the day, meh, shrug. As for my wife, you
[02:21] the day, meh, shrug. As for my wife, you can see it on her wrist right there. In
[02:23] can see it on her wrist right there. In that case, it does look a little bit
[02:24] that case, it does look a little bit bigger on her wrist, but again, she
[02:26] bigger on her wrist, but again, she didn't have any problems with it. She
[02:27] didn't have any problems with it. She was like, "Yeah, this is fine." Both of
[02:28] was like, "Yeah, this is fine." Both of us are used to wearing a watch all the
[02:30] us are used to wearing a watch all the time, so from a size standpoint, it's
[02:32] time, so from a size standpoint, it's technically like smaller than most
[02:34] technically like smaller than most watches and certainly lighter than most
[02:35] watches and certainly lighter than most watches. Now, as I mentioned, you can
[02:37] watches. Now, as I mentioned, you can swap bands to both other color bands uh
[02:39] swap bands to both other color bands uh that Garmin sells as well as to the arm
[02:42] that Garmin sells as well as to the arm band or bicep band uh here. That's
[02:44] band or bicep band uh here. That's probably one of the areas I find is most
[02:46] probably one of the areas I find is most fiddly on this, probably the most fiddly
[02:47] fiddly on this, probably the most fiddly item, actually, to be honest, is this
[02:49] item, actually, to be honest, is this little pin out right there. Getting this
[02:51] little pin out right there. Getting this out is generally pretty easy on both
[02:53] out is generally pretty easy on both sides, but sometimes the way the fabric
[02:54] sides, but sometimes the way the fabric rotates around pain in the butt, and
[02:56] rotates around pain in the butt, and then putting on the new one, it is
[02:57] then putting on the new one, it is nowhere near as clean or as efficient as
[03:00] nowhere near as clean or as efficient as doing that for Whoop or Fitbit is. This
[03:02] doing that for Whoop or Fitbit is. This is probably one of those things I would
[03:03] is probably one of those things I would expect like in a Circa 2.0 would be the
[03:05] expect like in a Circa 2.0 would be the first thing they change, probably to
[03:07] first thing they change, probably to something much more like the quick fit
[03:08] something much more like the quick fit system they have on their watches and
[03:10] system they have on their watches and had for many, many years, which allows
[03:11] had for many, many years, which allows you to simply pull down a pop it off in
[03:13] you to simply pull down a pop it off in a split second. Now, of course, also on
[03:14] a split second. Now, of course, also on the back is the optical heart rate
[03:16] the back is the optical heart rate sensor you see in green there. In this
[03:17] sensor you see in green there. In this case, it's Garmin's Gen 4 optical heart
[03:19] case, it's Garmin's Gen 4 optical heart rate sensor, though with an extra
[03:20] rate sensor, though with an extra hardware layer for skin temperature.
[03:22] hardware layer for skin temperature. That's something that up until now has
[03:23] That's something that up until now has been on their Gen 5 optical heart rate
[03:25] been on their Gen 5 optical heart rate sensor, the Garmin Elevate Gen 5, uh
[03:27] sensor, the Garmin Elevate Gen 5, uh which also includes ECG. This does not
[03:29] which also includes ECG. This does not have ECG in it, but it does have that
[03:31] have ECG in it, but it does have that skin temperature layer atop it to give
[03:33] skin temperature layer atop it to give you that skin temperature readings at
[03:34] you that skin temperature readings at night, which is the only time it takes
[03:36] night, which is the only time it takes those readings. There's been much talk
[03:38] those readings. There's been much talk about Gen 4 versus Gen 5, and people
[03:40] about Gen 4 versus Gen 5, and people talk about accuracy. Gen 5 does have
[03:42] talk about accuracy. Gen 5 does have slightly better accuracy, especially in
[03:44] slightly better accuracy, especially in edge cases in my testing. I've got an
[03:46] edge cases in my testing. I've got an entire video on accuracy of this device,
[03:48] entire video on accuracy of this device, like 30 minutes about the Circa accuracy
[03:50] like 30 minutes about the Circa accuracy in all sorts of different categories.
[03:52] in all sorts of different categories. You can check out in the corner there,
[03:53] You can check out in the corner there, but I would argue that the accuracy
[03:55] but I would argue that the accuracy piece isn't really the core issue with
[03:57] piece isn't really the core issue with the Gen 4 sensor here. I'm going to talk
[03:59] the Gen 4 sensor here. I'm going to talk about what I think is the actual issue a
[04:00] about what I think is the actual issue a little bit later on in the video. Garmin
[04:02] little bit later on in the video. Garmin says the reason they didn't put a Gen 5
[04:04] says the reason they didn't put a Gen 5 sensor on this is just simply too big uh
[04:06] sensor on this is just simply too big uh from a like width standpoint. It would
[04:08] from a like width standpoint. It would make this even wider than it already is.
[04:10] make this even wider than it already is. Now, one quick note is if you are
[04:11] Now, one quick note is if you are finding this video interesting and
[04:12] finding this video interesting and useful, just simply watch this all the
[04:13] useful, just simply watch this all the way through. That's the only thing the
[04:14] way through. That's the only thing the YouTube gods care about, and we got to
[04:16] YouTube gods care about, and we got to keep them happy. In any case, the last
[04:18] keep them happy. In any case, the last thing you probably notice on the bottom
[04:19] thing you probably notice on the bottom there is that standard Garmin charging
[04:20] there is that standard Garmin charging port that you see right there, the same
[04:22] port that you see right there, the same one that you would find on the bottom of
[04:24] one that you would find on the bottom of all of Garmin's watches or almost all of
[04:25] all of Garmin's watches or almost all of Garmin's watches from the last number of
[04:27] Garmin's watches from the last number of years. So, with that, I will walk
[04:29] years. So, with that, I will walk through the basics first, like the
[04:30] through the basics first, like the general day-to-day use of this device.
[04:33] general day-to-day use of this device. For the most part, you're just going to
[04:34] For the most part, you're just going to simply slide it on and do nothing more
[04:36] simply slide it on and do nothing more than that. You're going to take it here,
[04:37] than that. You're going to take it here, and you're going to go about your daily
[04:39] and you're going to go about your daily life. Now, in this, it's going to go
[04:40] life. Now, in this, it's going to go ahead and automatically measure all the
[04:42] ahead and automatically measure all the metrics that you would usually see on a
[04:43] metrics that you would usually see on a Garmin watch. In fact, there is
[04:45] Garmin watch. In fact, there is astonishingly few differences between
[04:47] astonishingly few differences between this and a high-end Garmin watch from
[04:49] this and a high-end Garmin watch from metric standpoint. You're going to see
[04:50] metric standpoint. You're going to see things like your sleep, as well as your
[04:52] things like your sleep, as well as your calories, and all the other things that
[04:53] calories, and all the other things that you would expect on that app. In the
[04:55] you would expect on that app. In the case of the Garmin app, they did add
[04:56] case of the Garmin app, they did add some refreshes here with the new
[04:57] some refreshes here with the new essentials tab that you see at the top
[04:59] essentials tab that you see at the top there. If you already have a Garmin
[05:01] there. If you already have a Garmin device, you can actually add this
[05:02] device, you can actually add this yourself in the settings. Any Garmin
[05:03] yourself in the settings. Any Garmin user can add this. Does not require
[05:05] user can add this. Does not require Garmin Connect Plus, because again,
[05:06] Garmin Connect Plus, because again, nothing in this video I'm showing is
[05:08] nothing in this video I'm showing is Garmin Connect Plus. That essentials tab
[05:10] Garmin Connect Plus. That essentials tab has four customizable slots, but there's
[05:12] has four customizable slots, but there's only six things to choose from. I don't
[05:14] only six things to choose from. I don't understand why I just can't put anything
[05:16] understand why I just can't put anything I want in there from metric standpoint.
[05:17] I want in there from metric standpoint. For example, I don't really care too
[05:19] For example, I don't really care too much about body battery. I'd much rather
[05:20] much about body battery. I'd much rather see a cute training load there or one of
[05:22] see a cute training load there or one of the other training focus metrics in
[05:24] the other training focus metrics in there. And there's no reason why I
[05:25] there. And there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to choose from, again,
[05:27] shouldn't be able to choose from, again, anything I darn well want. Now,
[05:28] anything I darn well want. Now, scrolling down from there in the app,
[05:29] scrolling down from there in the app, you've got your in-focus area. These
[05:31] you've got your in-focus area. These are, again, you can swipe left and right
[05:33] are, again, you can swipe left and right to these, and you can customize these. I
[05:34] to these, and you can customize these. I can go ahead and see my current training
[05:35] can go ahead and see my current training readiness as I see right there, cuz I've
[05:37] readiness as I see right there, cuz I've configured that as my default. I can see
[05:39] configured that as my default. I can see my training status as productive or
[05:40] my training status as productive or occasionally unproductive as it has been
[05:42] occasionally unproductive as it has been lately. Um I can go ahead and look at my
[05:44] lately. Um I can go ahead and look at my body battery, and so on down the list
[05:46] body battery, and so on down the list here. Below that, you've got the at a
[05:47] here. Below that, you've got the at a glance section. These are different
[05:49] glance section. These are different tiles that you can simply customize to
[05:50] tiles that you can simply customize to whatever you want. Uh again, you can
[05:52] whatever you want. Uh again, you can choose whatever tiles you want in there.
[05:54] choose whatever tiles you want in there. There's a lot more of these that you can
[05:55] There's a lot more of these that you can choose if you want to. Uh and then below
[05:56] choose if you want to. Uh and then below that, you've got your yesterday stats.
[05:58] that, you've got your yesterday stats. And then below that, you've got your
[05:59] And then below that, you've got your last 7-day stats. Again, all this is
[06:02] last 7-day stats. Again, all this is reasonably customizable. Now, one of the
[06:03] reasonably customizable. Now, one of the things I mentioned there was steps. What
[06:05] things I mentioned there was steps. What about step accuracy? As part of my full
[06:06] about step accuracy? As part of my full accuracy video, I dive into that. But
[06:08] accuracy video, I dive into that. But just a quick summary there, I did
[06:10] just a quick summary there, I did basically two core different tests. The
[06:12] basically two core different tests. The first one I did was a 500-step step
[06:14] first one I did was a 500-step step test. You can see the results of that
[06:15] test. You can see the results of that down below or on the side here something
[06:17] down below or on the side here something like that. All these are relatively
[06:18] like that. All these are relatively close. If Fitbit didn't nail it spot-on,
[06:21] close. If Fitbit didn't nail it spot-on, perhaps that's a bit of luck, perhaps
[06:22] perhaps that's a bit of luck, perhaps that's some algorithm, but kudos to them
[06:24] that's some algorithm, but kudos to them on that. Uh but the rest of them are
[06:26] on that. Uh but the rest of them are generally speaking in the ballpark.
[06:28] generally speaking in the ballpark. Likewise, when it comes to the steps
[06:29] Likewise, when it comes to the steps over an entire day, there's a bunch of
[06:31] over an entire day, there's a bunch of days down below here, three totally
[06:33] days down below here, three totally different days, one a tourist day in
[06:34] different days, one a tourist day in London, uh one a run day, one a bike
[06:37] London, uh one a run day, one a bike day. And you can see, generally
[06:38] day. And you can see, generally speaking, pretty close numbers in the
[06:40] speaking, pretty close numbers in the grand scheme of life, within 10 to 15%
[06:42] grand scheme of life, within 10 to 15% on most of these. Uh one note is that
[06:44] on most of these. Uh one note is that both Polar and Amazfit convert cycling
[06:46] both Polar and Amazfit convert cycling time into steps, which is why on the
[06:48] time into steps, which is why on the bike days, their steps are crazy pants
[06:51] bike days, their steps are crazy pants numbers. Again, I dive into my thoughts
[06:52] numbers. Again, I dive into my thoughts on that in my accuracy video up in the
[06:54] on that in my accuracy video up in the corner there if you want to go into that
[06:56] corner there if you want to go into that a little bit more. The next thing you
[06:57] a little bit more. The next thing you have then is sleep. Uh your sleep is
[06:59] have then is sleep. Uh your sleep is automatically recorded every night.
[07:00] automatically recorded every night. There's nothing you need to do about
[07:01] There's nothing you need to do about that. And you'll get a sleep score in
[07:03] that. And you'll get a sleep score in the morning. Within that sleep data,
[07:04] the morning. Within that sleep data, you're going to see the time you went to
[07:05] you're going to see the time you went to sleep, the time you woke up, your sleep
[07:07] sleep, the time you woke up, your sleep stages and phases, as well as your skin
[07:09] stages and phases, as well as your skin temperature, your heart rate
[07:10] temperature, your heart rate variability, your resting heart rate
[07:11] variability, your resting heart rate during sleep, etc. In my full accuracy
[07:14] during sleep, etc. In my full accuracy video, I dive through all the stuff
[07:16] video, I dive through all the stuff using all that data you see right there.
[07:18] using all that data you see right there. Uh but the long and the short of that is
[07:20] Uh but the long and the short of that is that generally speaking, all these
[07:21] that generally speaking, all these wearables were pretty darn similar. I
[07:22] wearables were pretty darn similar. I wore all of them every single night. And
[07:24] wore all of them every single night. And when it came to the times I went to
[07:25] when it came to the times I went to sleep and times I woke up, the ones on
[07:27] sleep and times I woke up, the ones on the wrist had the best results versus
[07:29] the wrist had the best results versus the ones on the bicep, no matter which
[07:31] the ones on the bicep, no matter which device it was, whether it was Circa or
[07:33] device it was, whether it was Circa or Whoop or Amazfit or Polar. If they're on
[07:35] Whoop or Amazfit or Polar. If they're on the bicep when it comes to sleep time,
[07:37] the bicep when it comes to sleep time, doesn't tend to be as accurate,
[07:38] doesn't tend to be as accurate, especially if you're on your phone at
[07:39] especially if you're on your phone at night in bed scrolling around a book,
[07:41] night in bed scrolling around a book, where your bicep doesn't move as much as
[07:43] where your bicep doesn't move as much as your hands might, then the bicep
[07:44] your hands might, then the bicep wearables tend to think you were asleep
[07:45] wearables tend to think you were asleep sooner than you were, and tend to think
[07:47] sooner than you were, and tend to think you woke up later than you were,
[07:48] you woke up later than you were, especially if you're on your phone in
[07:49] especially if you're on your phone in the morning as well in bed. But, as far
[07:51] the morning as well in bed. But, as far as the wrist-based ones go, they were
[07:52] as the wrist-based ones go, they were all in the same ballpark. Every device
[07:54] all in the same ballpark. Every device that I've tested has had a bad night
[07:56] that I've tested has had a bad night where it's just simply wrong, and that's
[07:58] where it's just simply wrong, and that's also true of Garmin. I think the worst
[07:59] also true of Garmin. I think the worst it was off by roughly half an hour or
[08:01] it was off by roughly half an hour or so, and I've seen the exact same thing
[08:03] so, and I've seen the exact same thing with Whoop and Oura and every device in
[08:05] with Whoop and Oura and every device in this category. One thing I don't do
[08:06] this category. One thing I don't do though is compare the accuracy of sleep
[08:08] though is compare the accuracy of sleep phases or stages, and the reason for
[08:10] phases or stages, and the reason for that is simple. The device to do that is
[08:12] that is simple. The device to do that is only accurate about 80% of the time in a
[08:14] only accurate about 80% of the time in a best-case scenario, and we would never
[08:16] best-case scenario, and we would never judge heart rate accuracy for a wearable
[08:18] judge heart rate accuracy for a wearable like a wristwatch uh against a chest
[08:20] like a wristwatch uh against a chest strap that was only accurate 80% of the
[08:22] strap that was only accurate 80% of the time. That would be crazy. So, I'm not
[08:23] time. That would be crazy. So, I'm not going to do the same thing for sleep
[08:24] going to do the same thing for sleep phases or sleep stages. Instead, the
[08:26] phases or sleep stages. Instead, the most important thing is really just what
[08:27] most important thing is really just what time you went to sleep and what time you
[08:28] time you went to sleep and what time you woke up. Speaking of waking up, this
[08:30] woke up. Speaking of waking up, this does have vibration alarms on it. You
[08:32] does have vibration alarms on it. You can configure two types of alarms. You
[08:34] can configure two types of alarms. You can configure a static alarm, in other
[08:35] can configure a static alarm, in other words, wake up at exactly this time and
[08:37] words, wake up at exactly this time and buzz buzz buzz on your wrist, or you can
[08:39] buzz buzz buzz on your wrist, or you can configure a smart alarm that basically
[08:40] configure a smart alarm that basically has a half an hour window before that to
[08:42] has a half an hour window before that to look at your sleep stages or phases and
[08:44] look at your sleep stages or phases and try to find the optimal time to make
[08:45] try to find the optimal time to make waking up less sucky. Now, with your day
[08:48] waking up less sucky. Now, with your day started, you're going to have your body
[08:49] started, you're going to have your body battery score. In my case, that score
[08:51] battery score. In my case, that score rose to almost 100 last night while I
[08:52] rose to almost 100 last night while I was sleeping, and has begun declining
[08:54] was sleeping, and has begun declining again since roughly uh 8:00 or so, 9:00
[08:57] again since roughly uh 8:00 or so, 9:00 this morning. And of course, as you do
[08:58] this morning. And of course, as you do different activities, it'll pull more of
[09:00] different activities, it'll pull more of your body battery. For example, a hard
[09:01] your body battery. For example, a hard workout. Uh by the same token, if I sit
[09:03] workout. Uh by the same token, if I sit in front of the TV for a while, my body
[09:05] in front of the TV for a while, my body battery might plateau and start to creep
[09:06] battery might plateau and start to creep back up again. The other thing you've
[09:08] back up again. The other thing you've got each morning that you can look at is
[09:09] got each morning that you can look at is your health status. This is basically
[09:11] your health status. This is basically just trending uh five core metrics, very
[09:13] just trending uh five core metrics, very similar to what Whoop and now all these
[09:15] similar to what Whoop and now all these companies are doing the same thing in
[09:16] companies are doing the same thing in this category. At the top, you've got
[09:18] this category. At the top, you've got heart rate, then you've got your HRV.
[09:20] heart rate, then you've got your HRV. After that, you got your respiration
[09:21] After that, you got your respiration rate. You have your skin temperature
[09:22] rate. You have your skin temperature with that Gen 4 plus uh sensor, and then
[09:25] with that Gen 4 plus uh sensor, and then you have your pulse ox. Pulse ox won't
[09:27] you have your pulse ox. Pulse ox won't show up unless you enable that. By
[09:28] show up unless you enable that. By default, it's disabled to save battery
[09:30] default, it's disabled to save battery life. I have it enabled for sleep only,
[09:33] life. I have it enabled for sleep only, uh not all day. I find virtually no
[09:34] uh not all day. I find virtually no benefits to doing it all day. Uh but,
[09:36] benefits to doing it all day. Uh but, for sleep, there's almost no impact to
[09:38] for sleep, there's almost no impact to my battery from what I've seen. It's
[09:40] my battery from what I've seen. It's basically negligible. So, I keep the
[09:41] basically negligible. So, I keep the sleep mode on so I can see that pulse ox
[09:43] sleep mode on so I can see that pulse ox there, which is essentially just your
[09:44] there, which is essentially just your blood oxygenation level. Speaking of
[09:46] blood oxygenation level. Speaking of settings, there is a slate of settings
[09:48] settings, there is a slate of settings that you can tweak on this device. It is
[09:50] that you can tweak on this device. It is very darn similar to other Garmin
[09:52] very darn similar to other Garmin watches. You're going to find settings
[09:53] watches. You're going to find settings named exactly the same thing. It's clear
[09:54] named exactly the same thing. It's clear they took that as a template, as you
[09:56] they took that as a template, as you would expect them to do logically, and
[09:58] would expect them to do logically, and then go ahead and tweak things from
[09:59] then go ahead and tweak things from there. There's some settings that you're
[10:00] there. There's some settings that you're like, "Eh, probably should have a
[10:01] like, "Eh, probably should have a different name, but good enough." Uh,
[10:03] different name, but good enough." Uh, now when it comes to workouts, there are
[10:04] now when it comes to workouts, there are three core ways this will track
[10:06] three core ways this will track workouts. The first is automatically.
[10:08] workouts. The first is automatically. You do nothing. You go out for a run,
[10:09] You do nothing. You go out for a run, you go out for a walk, you get up on a
[10:11] you go out for a walk, you get up on a bike, whatever the case is, it'll
[10:13] bike, whatever the case is, it'll automatically track those workouts. The
[10:15] automatically track those workouts. The second though is by pressing a button
[10:16] second though is by pressing a button right there. By pressing a button, it
[10:17] right there. By pressing a button, it starts a workout, and then you press it
[10:19] starts a workout, and then you press it again to stop the workout. That's useful
[10:21] again to stop the workout. That's useful for workout types like yoga or strength
[10:23] for workout types like yoga or strength training or something where there may
[10:25] training or something where there may not be a really clear aerobic or
[10:27] not be a really clear aerobic or basically heart rate spike at the
[10:28] basically heart rate spike at the beginning uh, to trigger that as a
[10:30] beginning uh, to trigger that as a workout. That's best for that. You can
[10:32] workout. That's best for that. You can also use the app. So, on the app, you
[10:34] also use the app. So, on the app, you can go to the very top there and choose
[10:35] can go to the very top there and choose a little plus, and then choose to record
[10:37] a little plus, and then choose to record a workout. You can choose which type of
[10:39] a workout. You can choose which type of workout. There's roughly 80 different
[10:40] workout. There's roughly 80 different types of workouts to choose from, and
[10:42] types of workouts to choose from, and then you press start. You'll then see a
[10:44] then you press start. You'll then see a very very disappointingly basic uh,
[10:47] very very disappointingly basic uh, screen during your workout showing your
[10:49] screen during your workout showing your current live heart rate. I will note, we
[10:51] current live heart rate. I will note, we won. Uh, I complained during my initial
[10:53] won. Uh, I complained during my initial launch video that that was crap that you
[10:55] launch video that that was crap that you can only see the average heart rate in
[10:56] can only see the average heart rate in Connect Plus people can see live heart
[10:58] Connect Plus people can see live heart rate, and the internet went wild, and we
[11:00] rate, and the internet went wild, and we won. 3 days later, uh, Garmin changed
[11:02] won. 3 days later, uh, Garmin changed it. So, kudos. The Garmin does listen
[11:05] it. So, kudos. The Garmin does listen sometimes, anyways. Uh, so you can see
[11:07] sometimes, anyways. Uh, so you can see your live heart rate, but you can't see
[11:08] your live heart rate, but you can't see any other metrics, which as I noted in
[11:10] any other metrics, which as I noted in my other initial video, uh, that also
[11:12] my other initial video, uh, that also kind of feels like crap. Uh, if I look
[11:14] kind of feels like crap. Uh, if I look at Amazfit and Polar and everyone else,
[11:16] at Amazfit and Polar and everyone else, I can see maps. I can see all sorts of
[11:17] I can see maps. I can see all sorts of other things. I've got a live activity
[11:19] other things. I've got a live activity page on my uh, lock screen. Many, many
[11:21] page on my uh, lock screen. Many, many options. Uh, in Garmin's case, some of
[11:23] options. Uh, in Garmin's case, some of those things, for example, a heart rate
[11:25] those things, for example, a heart rate chart is only available for Connect
[11:26] chart is only available for Connect Plus, but even if you had Connect Plus,
[11:28] Plus, but even if you had Connect Plus, you don't see anything else compared to
[11:30] you don't see anything else compared to every one of the competitors. Garmin
[11:31] every one of the competitors. Garmin needs to do better in this area, and
[11:33] needs to do better in this area, and again, the reality is for screenless
[11:35] again, the reality is for screenless wearable, you're going to use your phone
[11:36] wearable, you're going to use your phone for lots of things. That's just a
[11:38] for lots of things. That's just a function of that. Even if you're a
[11:39] function of that. Even if you're a person that doesn't use your phone
[11:41] person that doesn't use your phone during workouts, there are lots of other
[11:42] during workouts, there are lots of other people that do. A lot of people do. And
[11:44] people that do. A lot of people do. And so, that experience should be a lot
[11:47] so, that experience should be a lot better than it is today. It's just not
[11:48] better than it is today. It's just not awesome at all. In fact, one of the
[11:50] awesome at all. In fact, one of the reasons you would do a manual workout is
[11:51] reasons you would do a manual workout is to get GPS data outside, for example,
[11:53] to get GPS data outside, for example, cycling or running. In this scenario,
[11:55] cycling or running. In this scenario, enable it on a per sport profile basis,
[11:57] enable it on a per sport profile basis, for example, running outdoors but not
[11:58] for example, running outdoors but not indoors, etc. And at the end of that
[12:00] indoors, etc. And at the end of that workout, you'll see your entire GPS
[12:02] workout, you'll see your entire GPS track outdoors, just like you would for
[12:04] track outdoors, just like you would for any other Garmin watch activity. That
[12:06] any other Garmin watch activity. That activity that is uploaded to Strava or
[12:08] activity that is uploaded to Strava or TrainingPeaks or whatever platform you
[12:09] TrainingPeaks or whatever platform you want, uh including all that data. Again,
[12:12] want, uh including all that data. Again, it's very much identical to what you
[12:13] it's very much identical to what you would experience on a Garmin watch or a
[12:15] would experience on a Garmin watch or a Garmin bike computer, just using your
[12:17] Garmin bike computer, just using your phone for the GPS portion and your heart
[12:19] phone for the GPS portion and your heart rate coming from this band. However, the
[12:20] rate coming from this band. However, the most important thing when it comes to
[12:21] most important thing when it comes to screenless wearable is automatic
[12:23] screenless wearable is automatic exercise detection or automatic activity
[12:25] exercise detection or automatic activity detection. The idea being that I could
[12:27] detection. The idea being that I could walk out of this shed, straight out
[12:29] walk out of this shed, straight out there, and just simply go about my
[12:31] there, and just simply go about my activity, my workout, and it's going to
[12:32] activity, my workout, and it's going to automatically do everything without
[12:33] automatically do everything without pressing any buttons on my device or my
[12:36] pressing any buttons on my device or my phone. In the case of Garmin, they do
[12:38] phone. In the case of Garmin, they do have that as well. But most critically,
[12:40] have that as well. But most critically, they have one piece that no one else
[12:41] they have one piece that no one else has, the ability to automatically enable
[12:44] has, the ability to automatically enable GPS for those activities based on your
[12:46] GPS for those activities based on your preferences. Now, to be clear, that
[12:47] preferences. Now, to be clear, that doesn't happen by default. You go into
[12:49] doesn't happen by default. You go into the workout settings for each sport
[12:50] the workout settings for each sport profile, and you say, "You know what?
[12:51] profile, and you say, "You know what? For running, I want to enable GPS even
[12:54] For running, I want to enable GPS even automatic exercise detection." But the
[12:55] automatic exercise detection." But the idea here is super cool. If I go off for
[12:57] idea here is super cool. If I go off for that run, within 60 seconds, it's not
[12:59] that run, within 60 seconds, it's not only going to start the tracking of that
[13:01] only going to start the tracking of that workout, but also start a GPS track as
[13:03] workout, but also start a GPS track as well for it. Obviously, that'll burn a
[13:05] well for it. Obviously, that'll burn a little bit of your phone's battery life,
[13:06] little bit of your phone's battery life, but it's not too bad in most cases.
[13:08] but it's not too bad in most cases. That's something that none of these
[13:09] That's something that none of these other bands here can do automatically.
[13:11] other bands here can do automatically. You have to do that manually. Now,
[13:13] You have to do that manually. Now, setting aside the GPS for a moment,
[13:15] setting aside the GPS for a moment, whether that's enabled or disabled
[13:16] whether that's enabled or disabled doesn't really matter, I want to focus
[13:17] doesn't really matter, I want to focus instead on the core exercise detection
[13:19] instead on the core exercise detection piece and how well that works. I do dive
[13:21] piece and how well that works. I do dive into that more in the accuracy video,
[13:23] into that more in the accuracy video, but let me just give you the quick and
[13:24] but let me just give you the quick and dirty right here. For my initial bike
[13:26] dirty right here. For my initial bike commutes, I would say it missed like the
[13:28] commutes, I would say it missed like the vast majority of them. Uh it's simple as
[13:30] vast majority of them. Uh it's simple as that. Whether I was e-bike or non
[13:31] that. Whether I was e-bike or non e-bike, cargo bike or non cargo bike,
[13:33] e-bike, cargo bike or non cargo bike, didn't really matter. It missed almost
[13:35] didn't really matter. It missed almost all of them. There's no reason why it
[13:36] all of them. There's no reason why it should have missed those, given every
[13:38] should have missed those, given every other device on my arm picked it up just
[13:40] other device on my arm picked it up just fine. Now, one of the interesting things
[13:42] fine. Now, one of the interesting things here though is that Garmin is actually
[13:43] here though is that Garmin is actually changing the algorithm constantly behind
[13:45] changing the algorithm constantly behind the scenes. And I've seen that over the
[13:47] the scenes. And I've seen that over the last few weeks. The majority of the
[13:49] last few weeks. The majority of the automatic exercise recognition piece
[13:50] automatic exercise recognition piece comes from your phone as well as
[13:52] comes from your phone as well as back-end server platforms. And Garmin
[13:54] back-end server platforms. And Garmin has confirmed they've made numerous
[13:56] has confirmed they've made numerous changes there. And I'm seeing some of
[13:57] changes there. And I'm seeing some of the results of those changes with things
[13:59] the results of those changes with things getting better and better. For example,
[14:01] getting better and better. For example, earlier on during that same like bike
[14:02] earlier on during that same like bike commute missing period, I went for a
[14:04] commute missing period, I went for a legit road ride up in the mountains with
[14:05] legit road ride up in the mountains with my wife for a couple hours, 2 and 1/2
[14:07] my wife for a couple hours, 2 and 1/2 hours, something like that. And as we
[14:09] hours, something like that. And as we reached the top of the mountains and
[14:10] reached the top of the mountains and started descending back down again,
[14:11] started descending back down again, Circa decided it was done for the day.
[14:13] Circa decided it was done for the day. And that was for an auto detected
[14:14] And that was for an auto detected activity, not a manual one. Now, while
[14:16] activity, not a manual one. Now, while we descended for maybe 15 minutes, the
[14:18] we descended for maybe 15 minutes, the rest of the ride had plenty of ups and
[14:19] rest of the ride had plenty of ups and downs, including some pretty steep 17%
[14:22] downs, including some pretty steep 17% hills and other things that generally
[14:23] hills and other things that generally sucked. If more recent auto rides like
[14:26] sucked. If more recent auto rides like this other one I did with my wife just a
[14:27] this other one I did with my wife just a couple days ago, it nailed it perfectly.
[14:29] couple days ago, it nailed it perfectly. Like we barely left the parking lot and
[14:31] Like we barely left the parking lot and had turned on GPS, it had started
[14:33] had turned on GPS, it had started recording. We got back to the same
[14:34] recording. We got back to the same parking lot and it did the same thing
[14:36] parking lot and it did the same thing all within a couple minutes. Like
[14:37] all within a couple minutes. Like really, really good job on that.
[14:39] really, really good job on that. Likewise, when it comes to running and
[14:41] Likewise, when it comes to running and auto recognition, it's been solid for me
[14:43] auto recognition, it's been solid for me across the board. It's captured every
[14:44] across the board. It's captured every single one of my auto runs without an
[14:46] single one of my auto runs without an issue. And the same goes for all of my
[14:48] issue. And the same goes for all of my walks that I've done, both walks with my
[14:49] walks that I've done, both walks with my 10-year-old daughter as well as walks
[14:51] 10-year-old daughter as well as walks with my wife at night. All those been
[14:52] with my wife at night. All those been spot on. The one thing that does do for
[14:55] spot on. The one thing that does do for some of my runs though is capture the
[14:56] some of my runs though is capture the walking time to the start of the run. I
[14:58] walking time to the start of the run. I usually walk like 5 to 7 minutes to
[15:00] usually walk like 5 to 7 minutes to start of my runs just from like a Strava
[15:02] start of my runs just from like a Strava privacy standpoint. Uh in this case, it
[15:04] privacy standpoint. Uh in this case, it captured that walking time as part of
[15:05] captured that walking time as part of the activity. Now, with all these
[15:07] the activity. Now, with all these activities, you can trim that out if you
[15:08] activities, you can trim that out if you want to. That's super easy to do. But in
[15:11] want to. That's super easy to do. But in the case of Whoop and Fitbit, they
[15:12] the case of Whoop and Fitbit, they didn't include that additional walking
[15:13] didn't include that additional walking time. Garmin did. I suspect over time
[15:15] time. Garmin did. I suspect over time we'll see that tighten up a little bit
[15:16] we'll see that tighten up a little bit as well. But as you'll see in just a
[15:18] as well. But as you'll see in just a second, I'd rather Garmin be more
[15:20] second, I'd rather Garmin be more generous with the um time frame as
[15:22] generous with the um time frame as opposed to shortening it up. And the
[15:23] opposed to shortening it up. And the reason why I prefer that is simple. In
[15:25] reason why I prefer that is simple. In the case of Garmin, when they detect an
[15:27] the case of Garmin, when they detect an activity, they increase power to the
[15:29] activity, they increase power to the optical heart rate sensor to make it
[15:31] optical heart rate sensor to make it more accurate. That means that when they
[15:33] more accurate. That means that when they detect the activity has ended, they
[15:34] detect the activity has ended, they reduce power. So, if you go back to that
[15:36] reduce power. So, if you go back to that bike ride that I missed a portion of it
[15:38] bike ride that I missed a portion of it earlier on, here's what it looked like
[15:39] earlier on, here's what it looked like when I extended out. You can see it's a
[15:41] when I extended out. You can see it's a missing that heart rate section. In the
[15:43] missing that heart rate section. In the case of Garmin, there's no way to get
[15:45] case of Garmin, there's no way to get that heart rate back. So, the rest of
[15:46] that heart rate back. So, the rest of that ride, all the high intensity hills
[15:48] that ride, all the high intensity hills and intervals and all that kind of stuff
[15:49] and intervals and all that kind of stuff I did on that ride were gone. They're
[15:51] I did on that ride were gone. They're gone from my training load, they're gone
[15:52] gone from my training load, they're gone from my cute load. All that stuff is
[15:54] from my cute load. All that stuff is gone. That's a core difference between
[15:56] gone. That's a core difference between Whoop and Fitbit, which are recording
[15:58] Whoop and Fitbit, which are recording and applying their cardio load or
[16:00] and applying their cardio load or strain, depending which platform you
[16:01] strain, depending which platform you want to talk about, 24/7. So, no matter
[16:03] want to talk about, 24/7. So, no matter what you're doing on these two bands
[16:04] what you're doing on these two bands here, you're always accumulating
[16:06] here, you're always accumulating training load. But for Garmin, you only
[16:08] training load. But for Garmin, you only accumulate training load when an
[16:09] accumulate training load when an activity is detected, when a workout is
[16:11] activity is detected, when a workout is detected, either manual or automatic. If
[16:14] detected, either manual or automatic. If it isn't detected, there's no training
[16:16] it isn't detected, there's no training load and no way to get it back. Even if
[16:18] load and no way to get it back. Even if it had like general background heart
[16:20] it had like general background heart rate data, it's not going to use that
[16:21] rate data, it's not going to use that for the workout portion. So, for Garmin,
[16:23] for the workout portion. So, for Garmin, a company that's focused heavily on
[16:25] a company that's focused heavily on athletes, this seems like a pretty big
[16:26] athletes, this seems like a pretty big gap to me. I've talked to Garmin a lot
[16:28] gap to me. I've talked to Garmin a lot about this, had three different
[16:29] about this, had three different conference calls about this, and they
[16:31] conference calls about this, and they are working to address this in different
[16:32] are working to address this in different ways. They haven't finalized how exactly
[16:35] ways. They haven't finalized how exactly they're going to do that. My guess is
[16:36] they're going to do that. My guess is they're just going to turn on that
[16:37] they're just going to turn on that higher rate of heart rate recording
[16:39] higher rate of heart rate recording basically for longer after they think an
[16:41] basically for longer after they think an activity has ended, so that if it hasn't
[16:43] activity has ended, so that if it hasn't actually ended, you can pull that in
[16:45] actually ended, you can pull that in there. Now, mind you, Garmin hasn't
[16:46] there. Now, mind you, Garmin hasn't really missed many of my activities at
[16:48] really missed many of my activities at all. For example, I was moving house
[16:50] all. For example, I was moving house back up weeks ago, and as part of that,
[16:52] back up weeks ago, and as part of that, moving a crap load of really heavy boxes
[16:54] moving a crap load of really heavy boxes constantly for many, many hours in super
[16:56] constantly for many, many hours in super high heat with no air conditioning. That
[16:58] high heat with no air conditioning. That picked up as a strength workout. So,
[17:00] picked up as a strength workout. So, kudos on that. And the reason why
[17:01] kudos on that. And the reason why capturing all those heavy box moving
[17:03] capturing all those heavy box moving matter is cuz that's obviously training
[17:05] matter is cuz that's obviously training load. Whether or not you define it as
[17:07] load. Whether or not you define it as training, that is load onto your body.
[17:09] training, that is load onto your body. So, having captured that successfully,
[17:11] So, having captured that successfully, you'll see added to your cute load chart
[17:13] you'll see added to your cute load chart that you see right there. Acute load is
[17:15] that you see right there. Acute load is basically just your training load. It's
[17:16] basically just your training load. It's as simple as that. Acute load in
[17:17] as simple as that. Acute load in Garmin's world is basically a 7-day kind
[17:20] Garmin's world is basically a 7-day kind of trended average compared to your
[17:21] of trended average compared to your 28-day baseline. This all then ties into
[17:23] 28-day baseline. This all then ties into your training status, that be
[17:25] your training status, that be productive, unproductive, maintaining,
[17:27] productive, unproductive, maintaining, etc., which is basically looking at how
[17:28] etc., which is basically looking at how the coaching side of things would
[17:30] the coaching side of things would perceive your training. Is what you're
[17:31] perceive your training. Is what you're doing going to get you faster or more
[17:33] doing going to get you faster or more fit long-term? So, that means that while
[17:36] fit long-term? So, that means that while it may be fine to do, for example,
[17:37] it may be fine to do, for example, stand-up paddleboarding, that's not
[17:39] stand-up paddleboarding, that's not going to get me faster or fitter when it
[17:41] going to get me faster or fitter when it comes to running. So, that's kind of
[17:42] comes to running. So, that's kind of what training status is looking at. And
[17:44] what training status is looking at. And then, of course, you have your training
[17:45] then, of course, you have your training readiness, which is combining all these
[17:47] readiness, which is combining all these things under one umbrella. So, it's
[17:48] things under one umbrella. So, it's looking at both the sleep portions and
[17:50] looking at both the sleep portions and your day-to-day stress, etc. It's
[17:52] your day-to-day stress, etc. It's looking at your training load, is that
[17:54] looking at your training load, is that load appropriate to you, and then
[17:55] load appropriate to you, and then looking at your recovery time. So, are
[17:57] looking at your recovery time. So, are you actually recovering from that, and
[17:58] you actually recovering from that, and how does your HRV or heart rate
[18:00] how does your HRV or heart rate variability look? I think Garmin's
[18:01] variability look? I think Garmin's training readiness is one of the best
[18:02] training readiness is one of the best things they've done in a long, long
[18:04] things they've done in a long, long time. It's been here for a few years,
[18:06] time. It's been here for a few years, and overall I find it does a pretty good
[18:07] and overall I find it does a pretty good job of judging what I should be doing
[18:09] job of judging what I should be doing day-to-day. Now, one more workout I
[18:10] day-to-day. Now, one more workout I think to mention here is you can also do
[18:11] think to mention here is you can also do heart rate broadcasting. So, I can long
[18:13] heart rate broadcasting. So, I can long hold this down for 3 seconds here, and
[18:15] hold this down for 3 seconds here, and it's going to turn a little light there,
[18:17] it's going to turn a little light there, and it's going to start broadcasting
[18:18] and it's going to start broadcasting automatically. That means if I have a
[18:19] automatically. That means if I have a Zwift or Peloton or any other platform
[18:22] Zwift or Peloton or any other platform that compared to an ANT+ or Bluetooth
[18:24] that compared to an ANT+ or Bluetooth heart rate sensor, it can pair to this.
[18:26] heart rate sensor, it can pair to this. That can be a Garmin Edge device, it can
[18:27] That can be a Garmin Edge device, it can be a watch. Uh, in fact, you'll see
[18:29] be a watch. Uh, in fact, you'll see right now my watch just said broadcast
[18:31] right now my watch just said broadcast heart rate enabled. This is a message
[18:32] heart rate enabled. This is a message actually coming from my phone letting me
[18:34] actually coming from my phone letting me know that broadcasting is happening from
[18:36] know that broadcasting is happening from Circa, which now seems like a good time
[18:38] Circa, which now seems like a good time to talk about battery life. So, Garmin
[18:40] to talk about battery life. So, Garmin is claiming 10 days of battery life
[18:41] is claiming 10 days of battery life here, and they're claiming basically 30
[18:43] here, and they're claiming basically 30 minutes of workout time per day and not
[18:45] minutes of workout time per day and not having any sort of pulse ox or blood
[18:47] having any sort of pulse ox or blood oxygenation enabled at night. And in my
[18:50] oxygenation enabled at night. And in my testing, it's it's totally hit or miss.
[18:53] testing, it's it's totally hit or miss. Uh, so, basically 10 days would mean 10%
[18:55] Uh, so, basically 10 days would mean 10% per day. And there are some days I'm
[18:57] per day. And there are some days I'm absolutely getting 10% per day with an
[18:59] absolutely getting 10% per day with an hour workout, no problems. But there are
[19:01] hour workout, no problems. But there are other days that I'll get 30% a day for
[19:03] other days that I'll get 30% a day for no obvious reason. Garmin is tracking
[19:05] no obvious reason. Garmin is tracking down all of my battery woes, they've
[19:07] down all of my battery woes, they've enabled additional debug logging on
[19:09] enabled additional debug logging on this, but in looking at a a of other
[19:10] this, but in looking at a a of other people, this sort of variability seems
[19:13] people, this sort of variability seems normal. There's no way though I'm
[19:14] normal. There's no way though I'm getting the 10 days of battery life with
[19:16] getting the 10 days of battery life with this. Like just simply hard not going to
[19:18] this. Like just simply hard not going to happen. Admittedly, I'm working out
[19:20] happen. Admittedly, I'm working out between 1 and 3 hours a day, so that's
[19:21] between 1 and 3 hours a day, so that's going to burn a little bit more, but on
[19:23] going to burn a little bit more, but on the Whoop strap for example, which has
[19:25] the Whoop strap for example, which has 14 days of claimed battery life, no
[19:26] 14 days of claimed battery life, no matter what I do, I get to 14 days
[19:29] matter what I do, I get to 14 days virtually every single time, right? And
[19:31] virtually every single time, right? And that is with whether it's crazy
[19:32] that is with whether it's crazy workouts, I've gone like multi-day hikes
[19:34] workouts, I've gone like multi-day hikes 14 hours a day, and I'm still getting 14
[19:37] 14 hours a day, and I'm still getting 14 days of battery life. So Garmin
[19:39] days of battery life. So Garmin definitely has some work to do on that.
[19:41] definitely has some work to do on that. Generally speaking though, when it comes
[19:42] Generally speaking though, when it comes to workouts, it burns at roughly 1 to 2%
[19:45] to workouts, it burns at roughly 1 to 2% per hour. And it doesn't seem to matter
[19:47] per hour. And it doesn't seem to matter too much whether I have the heart rate
[19:48] too much whether I have the heart rate broadcasting enabled or not. It seems in
[19:50] broadcasting enabled or not. It seems in that same ballpark, which might explain
[19:52] that same ballpark, which might explain why for example, they don't have that
[19:54] why for example, they don't have that heart rate at a higher fidelity level
[19:56] heart rate at a higher fidelity level the rest of the day. Cuz if it burned at
[19:58] the rest of the day. Cuz if it burned at 1% per hour, that's basically just 4
[20:00] 1% per hour, that's basically just 4 days, right? 25% per day roughly gives
[20:02] days, right? 25% per day roughly gives you 4 days. Obviously less than all of
[20:04] you 4 days. Obviously less than all of their competitors, even less than Polar,
[20:06] their competitors, even less than Polar, so therefore that's why they have to
[20:07] so therefore that's why they have to reduce that heart rate fidelity level to
[20:10] reduce that heart rate fidelity level to go ahead and get through the theoretical
[20:12] go ahead and get through the theoretical 10 days. The point there being that for
[20:13] 10 days. The point there being that for all the internet focus on the Gen 4
[20:15] all the internet focus on the Gen 4 heart rate sensor, I actually don't
[20:17] heart rate sensor, I actually don't think it's the accuracy side of that
[20:18] think it's the accuracy side of that equation that matters that much. I think
[20:20] equation that matters that much. I think it's the battery side. I think if you
[20:21] it's the battery side. I think if you look at Garmin's Gen 4 optical heart
[20:23] look at Garmin's Gen 4 optical heart rate sensor, which is roughly 5 to 6
[20:25] rate sensor, which is roughly 5 to 6 years old now, it was not designed for
[20:27] years old now, it was not designed for this sort of scenario. It was designed
[20:28] this sort of scenario. It was designed to be in a watch where the heart rate
[20:30] to be in a watch where the heart rate side of it was a tiny little piece of
[20:32] side of it was a tiny little piece of the larger puzzle of screen and GPS and
[20:34] the larger puzzle of screen and GPS and all the other things going on. When they
[20:36] all the other things going on. When they stuffed it in this, it was kind of a an
[20:38] stuffed it in this, it was kind of a an awkward fit. And think the same is true
[20:40] awkward fit. And think the same is true the Gen 5 optical heart rate sensor,
[20:41] the Gen 5 optical heart rate sensor, which is now I think 3 or so years old.
[20:43] which is now I think 3 or so years old. Even if it was too big for it, I think
[20:45] Even if it was too big for it, I think from a battery burn standpoint, as we
[20:47] from a battery burn standpoint, as we saw the Index band there, it was also
[20:49] saw the Index band there, it was also not great from a battery standpoint. It
[20:51] not great from a battery standpoint. It certainly wouldn't have scaled to be
[20:52] certainly wouldn't have scaled to be 24/7 usage here. Ultimately, I think
[20:55] 24/7 usage here. Ultimately, I think this will require a Gen 6 optical heart
[20:57] this will require a Gen 6 optical heart rate sensor sometime down the road that
[20:59] rate sensor sometime down the road that is custom built for this sort of device
[21:01] is custom built for this sort of device and the needs of this sort of device. So
[21:03] and the needs of this sort of device. So then, since we're talking about the
[21:04] then, since we're talking about the optical heart rate sensor, let's talk
[21:06] optical heart rate sensor, let's talk about heart rate accuracy during
[21:07] about heart rate accuracy during workouts. Again, I have a massive video
[21:09] workouts. Again, I have a massive video in the corner of that. Go check that
[21:10] in the corner of that. Go check that out, but I want to briefly talk through
[21:12] out, but I want to briefly talk through like five core workouts. First up,
[21:14] like five core workouts. First up, steady state run. As you can see here,
[21:16] steady state run. As you can see here, spot on. This is compared to a chest
[21:18] spot on. This is compared to a chest strap and all the other wearables that
[21:19] strap and all the other wearables that you see at the bottom there. I have a
[21:21] you see at the bottom there. I have a bicep band on some of these workouts as
[21:22] bicep band on some of these workouts as well. Steady state run, no problem.
[21:25] well. Steady state run, no problem. Indoor trainer rides. Here's the first
[21:26] Indoor trainer rides. Here's the first one right here. Spot on, no problems
[21:28] one right here. Spot on, no problems there. Uh you'll notice that the heart
[21:30] there. Uh you'll notice that the heart rate from Circa wrist starts about 7
[21:32] rate from Circa wrist starts about 7 minutes into it. I had it on auto for
[21:33] minutes into it. I had it on auto for this particular one. So, it was a little
[21:35] this particular one. So, it was a little bit late in that trainer ride because
[21:36] bit late in that trainer ride because the warm-up was super easy. Meanwhile, a
[21:38] the warm-up was super easy. Meanwhile, a road ride. Here's an outdoor road ride
[21:40] road ride. Here's an outdoor road ride up in the mountains, hot sunny day,
[21:41] up in the mountains, hot sunny day, perfect on this. Great job on the wrist
[21:44] perfect on this. Great job on the wrist side of this. Yet, when I went to cold
[21:45] side of this. Yet, when I went to cold weather here in Newfoundland, Canada,
[21:48] weather here in Newfoundland, Canada, things got a bit rougher. On the road
[21:50] things got a bit rougher. On the road ride, for example, the accuracy was
[21:51] ride, for example, the accuracy was pretty rough for me, especially on this
[21:53] pretty rough for me, especially on this really rainy day that you see right
[21:54] really rainy day that you see right here. Uh definitely was kind of all over
[21:56] here. Uh definitely was kind of all over the place. And that was true of all the
[21:58] the place. And that was true of all the wrist-based bands versus the bicep bands
[22:00] wrist-based bands versus the bicep bands did much better for all of these
[22:02] did much better for all of these companies. Yet, we went out a little bit
[22:03] companies. Yet, we went out a little bit warmer day. You can see my wife standing
[22:05] warmer day. You can see my wife standing right here against her Phoenix 8 uh unit
[22:07] right here against her Phoenix 8 uh unit there and a chest strap. That was
[22:08] there and a chest strap. That was actually really, really good. That
[22:10] actually really, really good. That section there that's in yellow, that was
[22:11] section there that's in yellow, that was a super chunky uh gravelly section where
[22:14] a super chunky uh gravelly section where her Phoenix 8 did worse despite having a
[22:16] her Phoenix 8 did worse despite having a Gen 5 optical heart rate sensor because
[22:18] Gen 5 optical heart rate sensor because it's heavier and it's going to bounce
[22:19] it's heavier and it's going to bounce around more than the Circa would. Good
[22:21] around more than the Circa would. Good example of why having a lighter band or
[22:24] example of why having a lighter band or lighter unit will do better in harder
[22:26] lighter unit will do better in harder scenarios despite whether it's Gen 4 or
[22:28] scenarios despite whether it's Gen 4 or Gen 5. Yet, one of the challenges I have
[22:30] Gen 5. Yet, one of the challenges I have with this device that was intervals. In
[22:32] with this device that was intervals. In particular, 400 m intervals. I had one
[22:34] particular, 400 m intervals. I had one that I initially started off with 8 by
[22:36] that I initially started off with 8 by 400s and it fell apart entirely.
[22:38] 400s and it fell apart entirely. Thinking it was just a one-off, I went
[22:39] Thinking it was just a one-off, I went out and did it again.
[22:41] out and did it again. Same exact thing. And again, this is
[22:43] Same exact thing. And again, this is colder weather here in Newfoundland,
[22:44] colder weather here in Newfoundland, rainy weather, crappier weather than I
[22:46] rainy weather, crappier weather than I had in Spain where it generally worked
[22:47] had in Spain where it generally worked spot on. Thinking that maybe third
[22:49] spot on. Thinking that maybe third time's the charm, I went out again and
[22:51] time's the charm, I went out again and suffered. Nope, it failed yet again. I
[22:54] suffered. Nope, it failed yet again. I don't know why it's failing for me on
[22:55] don't know why it's failing for me on this particular workout repeatedly over
[22:57] this particular workout repeatedly over and over and over again. I had my friend
[22:59] and over and over again. I had my friend and fellow YouTuber DezFit uh also
[23:01] and fellow YouTuber DezFit uh also suffer and go out and do this exact same
[23:02] suffer and go out and do this exact same workout to see if you got the same
[23:04] workout to see if you got the same results. For him, in warm weather, it
[23:06] results. For him, in warm weather, it worked perfect. I think when it comes to
[23:07] worked perfect. I think when it comes to accuracy overall of this sensor in
[23:09] accuracy overall of this sensor in sport, it's exactly what we'd expect.
[23:11] sport, it's exactly what we'd expect. It's performing basically the same as
[23:13] It's performing basically the same as all of their competitors save for this
[23:14] all of their competitors save for this one running workout, uh, whether it's on
[23:16] one running workout, uh, whether it's on the wrist or on the bicep, and the same
[23:18] the wrist or on the bicep, and the same truism is always there. If you move to
[23:20] truism is always there. If you move to the bicep, no matter what the optical
[23:22] the bicep, no matter what the optical heart rate sensor is from all these
[23:23] heart rate sensor is from all these companies, it will do better during
[23:25] companies, it will do better during workouts. Conversely, during sleep,
[23:27] workouts. Conversely, during sleep, it'll tend to do worse. Now, speaking of
[23:29] it'll tend to do worse. Now, speaking of doing worse, we need to talk briefly
[23:31] doing worse, we need to talk briefly about bugs. The bugs on this device are
[23:34] about bugs. The bugs on this device are a lot. Uh, very similar mind you to
[23:36] a lot. Uh, very similar mind you to Fitbit era when it came out 3 months
[23:38] Fitbit era when it came out 3 months ago, it was full of lots of bugs. And
[23:40] ago, it was full of lots of bugs. And the general rule of thumb in my reviews
[23:41] the general rule of thumb in my reviews is if I have a dedicated bug section,
[23:43] is if I have a dedicated bug section, that means it was pretty rough. Versus
[23:45] that means it was pretty rough. Versus other times I just stick the bugs in
[23:47] other times I just stick the bugs in various sections as I go along. Here it
[23:49] various sections as I go along. Here it was rough. Uh, now, there are a ton of
[23:51] was rough. Uh, now, there are a ton of bugs to go through. I'm just going to
[23:52] bugs to go through. I'm just going to simply put them on the screen right
[23:54] simply put them on the screen right there, uh, and some of the thoughts on
[23:56] there, uh, and some of the thoughts on each one of them. Some of them are being
[23:57] each one of them. Some of them are being fixed, some of them are in progress,
[23:58] fixed, some of them are in progress, etc. I will say Garmin has been looking
[24:01] etc. I will say Garmin has been looking at every single one of the bugs I've
[24:02] at every single one of the bugs I've submitted and diving into it and trying
[24:04] submitted and diving into it and trying to figure out what's going on. But there
[24:05] to figure out what's going on. But there are just way more bugs than I would
[24:07] are just way more bugs than I would expect from Garmin, uh, historically
[24:09] expect from Garmin, uh, historically speaking at launch. This is just not a
[24:11] speaking at launch. This is just not a super polished launch. There's a bunch
[24:13] super polished launch. There's a bunch of changes that Garmin's made in the
[24:14] of changes that Garmin's made in the last year and a half or so around
[24:16] last year and a half or so around reducing the external tester pool ahead
[24:18] reducing the external tester pool ahead of launch, and that's having the results
[24:20] of launch, and that's having the results that you see right there. Most of these
[24:22] that you see right there. Most of these issues will be fixed really quickly, but
[24:24] issues will be fixed really quickly, but again, I or you should not be finding
[24:26] again, I or you should not be finding these issues. These should not be launch
[24:28] these issues. These should not be launch issues. The issues that we should find
[24:29] issues. The issues that we should find are like super quirky, and these are all
[24:32] are like super quirky, and these are all pretty easy to stumble upon. Okay, so
[24:34] pretty easy to stumble upon. Okay, so finally at the end here, where do I
[24:35] finally at the end here, where do I stand? Let's wrap up some expectations
[24:37] stand? Let's wrap up some expectations versus reality. When it comes to the
[24:39] versus reality. When it comes to the price, I expected it at $199. I think
[24:41] price, I expected it at $199. I think that makes sense for Garmin as a
[24:43] that makes sense for Garmin as a company. They're a premium device
[24:44] company. They're a premium device company. You're not likely to see them
[24:46] company. You're not likely to see them at 99 bucks despite how many of us might
[24:48] at 99 bucks despite how many of us might want them there. Doesn't really make
[24:49] want them there. Doesn't really make sense. And again, Fitbit is really
[24:51] sense. And again, Fitbit is really upselling that subscription piece,
[24:53] upselling that subscription piece, whereas Garmin is like half farted on
[24:55] whereas Garmin is like half farted on Connect Plus. When it comes to the
[24:57] Connect Plus. When it comes to the button, I did not expect a button at
[24:58] button, I did not expect a button at all. I think that makes a lot of sense
[25:00] all. I think that makes a lot of sense in theory, right? Garmin's reasoning for
[25:02] in theory, right? Garmin's reasoning for this was it gives people a choice, just
[25:04] this was it gives people a choice, just like on their watch you have touchscreen
[25:05] like on their watch you have touchscreen or buttons, the same sort of thing here
[25:06] or buttons, the same sort of thing here as well. And in theory, I like that, but
[25:09] as well. And in theory, I like that, but I feel like it is a bit of a crutch for
[25:10] I feel like it is a bit of a crutch for Garmin not to get automatic exercise
[25:12] Garmin not to get automatic exercise detection really nailed. I think
[25:14] detection really nailed. I think long-term they will, but in the
[25:15] long-term they will, but in the meantime, it is both a crutch or at
[25:17] meantime, it is both a crutch or at least a way to get around it depending
[25:18] least a way to get around it depending on how you want to look at things. When
[25:21] on how you want to look at things. When it comes to the accuracy, again,
[25:22] it comes to the accuracy, again, expectations are basically where I
[25:24] expectations are basically where I expect it to be overall minus those
[25:26] expect it to be overall minus those 400-m run repeats that I've done that
[25:28] 400-m run repeats that I've done that many many times in this exact weather in
[25:30] many many times in this exact weather in this exact location on Garmin watches of
[25:32] this exact location on Garmin watches of the Gen 4, and it was fine. So, not sure
[25:34] the Gen 4, and it was fine. So, not sure what's happening there. When it comes to
[25:35] what's happening there. When it comes to the polish of the device from a hardware
[25:37] the polish of the device from a hardware standpoint, I'm pretty happy with it. I
[25:39] standpoint, I'm pretty happy with it. I do think it's maybe a smidge bit long in
[25:41] do think it's maybe a smidge bit long in this direction, uh but it doesn't really
[25:43] this direction, uh but it doesn't really bother me personally. Maybe for smaller
[25:45] bother me personally. Maybe for smaller wrists, uh but when it comes to the
[25:46] wrists, uh but when it comes to the quality of the app, things are not super
[25:48] quality of the app, things are not super stable right now, and my expectation was
[25:50] stable right now, and my expectation was much higher than reality.
[25:53] much higher than reality. Ultimately though, this is a good
[25:54] Ultimately though, this is a good device. I think a lot of people would be
[25:55] device. I think a lot of people would be pretty happy with it, especially if
[25:57] pretty happy with it, especially if you're already in the Garmin ecosystem.
[25:58] you're already in the Garmin ecosystem. Though, I don't think you need to be in
[26:00] Though, I don't think you need to be in the Garmin ecosystem for this device. In
[26:01] the Garmin ecosystem for this device. In fact, I don't buy the idea this is only
[26:03] fact, I don't buy the idea this is only for Garmin people. It's for everyone.
[26:04] for Garmin people. It's for everyone. It's for just like Whoop people or
[26:06] It's for just like Whoop people or Fitbit people or maybe some people. It's
[26:07] Fitbit people or maybe some people. It's for anyone that wants to track their
[26:09] for anyone that wants to track their health and fitness 24/7 and wants to do
[26:11] health and fitness 24/7 and wants to do workout tracking. Garmin's just leaning
[26:13] workout tracking. Garmin's just leaning heavier into the workout tracking piece.
[26:15] heavier into the workout tracking piece. The final question then is this for me?
[26:17] The final question then is this for me? Honestly, no. And the reason isn't
[26:20] Honestly, no. And the reason isn't because there's anything wrong with
[26:21] because there's anything wrong with this, it's because I've got this
[26:22] this, it's because I've got this instead, right? I've got a Garmin watch,
[26:24] instead, right? I've got a Garmin watch, a Fenix a former watch. That's what I'm
[26:26] a Fenix a former watch. That's what I'm going to use. I like the flashlight at
[26:27] going to use. I like the flashlight at night, for example. I don't want a
[26:29] night, for example. I don't want a summer band. I want a flashlight to get
[26:30] summer band. I want a flashlight to get around at night. I want the time in the
[26:32] around at night. I want the time in the middle of night. I don't like touching
[26:33] middle of night. I don't like touching my phone at night once I fall asleep
[26:35] my phone at night once I fall asleep anyways. So, the Circul band isn't for
[26:36] anyways. So, the Circul band isn't for me cuz I already have a Garmin watch
[26:38] me cuz I already have a Garmin watch that I'm going to use 24/7. Anyways,
[26:41] that I'm going to use 24/7. Anyways, hopefully you found this interesting and
[26:42] hopefully you found this interesting and useful. Thanks for watching. Have a good
[26:44] useful. Thanks for watching. Have a good one.
